advertising--do it for free or is that just plain silly?

A pretty big chain store asked me to run a promo on my blog for their store. I did and was thanked but it got me wondering...have I just been played? I'm a newbie to ad requests (like you couldn't tell!)

yeah, they should pay you for stuff like that. I don't post anything for free unless *I* want to. If advertising is something you want to get into, it might be worth it to write up a media kit so you can respond to those kinds of requests.
don't worry about it- now you just know not to do it again :)
I agree with Maternal Spark. You should have been paid something for it. I would also write up a media kit for future opps;)

And yeah, you can't do anything now so don't worry about it.
I agree with Maternal Spark too. You should have gotten something for the ad but don't expect too much. What you have now might invite other potential advertisers but you know what to do. :)
Thanks, everybody. Now I DO know. And a media kit is a great idea.
unless you really love them, you probly should get something in return. unless your just trying to build up your blogs reputation...
Ok, this may be a dumb question, but what exactly should be included in a media kit for advertising on your blog? I am thinking that once my blog "makeover" is done, that I'd like to offer ad space, but have no idea how to do it.

Sorry for the hijack of the thread!
I saw that on your blog Christina. They asked me to do run that ad and I didn't because there was no incentive for me to run it. I need to put together a media kit - thanks ladies for the reminder.
This time I was ok running the ad b/c I like Marshall's a lot. They do have great shoes. If it had been a store chain I didn't enjoy (I won't name names here) I probably would have passed.
I received an email the other day from a food company asking me to run a press release, and I told them I need samples first :))
Make sure that companies don't use you. I've learned that over the years. If they came to you in the first place then they value your blog. Make sure you get something out of the deal, otherwise tell them to take a hike. Other opportunities will come your way and those companies will value you and your blog's space.
Great suggestions. I'm really glad I asked!
