advertising--do it for free or is that just plain silly?

A pretty big chain store asked me to run a promo on my blog for their store. I did and was thanked but it got me wondering...have I just been played? I'm a newbie to ad requests (like you couldn't tell!)

I agree with Jennifer. They know that if they ask enough blogger to run the ad, some will say yes. Any big box store can afford to pay you fairly for your ad space. A blogger's sidebar is how they make their money. But all learn from experience, right :)

And for those of you looking for media kit examples, I don't have a true kit, though I plan to make up a PDF version, but here's my advertising page so you can get an idea of the type of info they'll be looking for: http://www.greenyourdecor.com/advertise/

Thanks so much for sharing your ad information. Now, I have a good idea of where to start when putting it together. Thanks, again!
That is exactly what I have, a media page so to speak. Don't advertise your rates though and send it to potentials only. And these are the things that only come with experience. I think back about some of the ways I was "taken" by companies and PR firms and can only shake my head...live and learn. :)
Determining rates is difficult, but as you say, live and learn. Thanks!
They didn't offer you anything for you to promote their products. You should have either received the product they were promoting or paid for the ad. Do you have ad prices listed on your blog? I always read the blogs I am interested in promoting our products to see if we are a fit. I look at the prices of their ad and then I make my decision. Unless I have worked with someone over and over again, I always send product for them to sample before I ask them to do anything for us,

Hope this helps.
