I have a blog that I sell advertising spaces on directly(myself).
I have a local business who wants to purchase advertising space and they want me to fill out a w-9 so they can fill out a 1099 at the end of the year for me. I would have to put my social security number on the w-9 and I don't feel comfortable doing that.
Anyone encountered this before?

I've done this many times. What you earn as a blogger you have to report at tax time. Simply fill out the w-9 and they'll send you a 1099 at the beginning of the year. It's general practice. Some companies require it and others don't.

Do you use your social security number?
Yes, I fill out the form with my social security number so they can send me a 1099 at the beginning of the year. It's for tax purposes. You can ask them if you could bypass that and not fill out the w9, but for most advertising deals if it's surpasses a certain amount then they are required to have you fill out a w9.
interesting dilemma. Is it worth it to become a LLC and be assigned a tax I? I have been comtemplating this for awhile and not sure if I want to go that route.
Thanks! I think once I make enough money advertising, it will be worth it. But for an individual buying one month of advertising, handing over a social security number makes me nervous. Let me know if you ever change to one!
I work in a CPA office and can tell you that Uncle Sam wants to know about the money you make on your blog to, regardless of how you do it. Filling out a W-9 then providing the advertised person with a 1099 can be the better route to go if you are just starting off. Once you begin to build more advertising clients then decide if applying for a Tax Id and become LLC.
Thanks! I claim everything I make on advertising on my taxes and have no problem claiming the income. I greatly appreciate the advise. I may have to go the LLc route eventually
I agree, it is not uncommon to use these forms if an income is being reported...which it should be.
I've done it several times when I was accepted into affiliate programs.
Thanks, I thought there was a threshold. I should have mentioned that this is an individual advertising their home business and is only paying $15 for advertising. I do report all income, but I am nervous about giving my social number to someone who is only paying $15 for advertising and I have had problems with identitiy theft in the past.
