I'm just curious how successful this is. I've noticed lot's of blogs saying, "check back here on 12/12/2009 {example date} to see if your the winner!" Personally, I would totally forget and not check back but I'm just wondering if there are any bloggers here that have had success with this route vs emailing the winner. Is this easier to manage? How many runner ups do you go through?

If someone has spent the time to make qualified entries, and they are lucky enough to win one of my drawings, I feel I should email them. That being said once the email is sent, the ball is in their court. It is not my problem if you "discover" the winning notification a week later, after a new winner has been chosen.
I always say I will announce the winner in my next newsletter, which I do, then I also email the winner right after the announcement. I have found that people get really excited when they open it up and see their own names, so I think that is fun. But sometimes people miss it, which is why I also email them.
That's a fantastic system Lexie! I bet that would be exciting to see it in the newsletter for the winner. And the follow up is good.
I always announce the winner on my blog and then e-mail the winner. Usually they respond within 24h.

What is tough is when entries don't have a google account and don't leave an e-mail address in the comments and I have to track them down...
