As a point of background to my response, I'm American, but grew up in Vienna and Amsterdam. As such was exposed to several languages at a young age. I think it's perfectly fine, but I totally do not like the way shows like Dora the Explorer approach it. Their whole "say it two ways" approach makes no sense to me. Learning languages at any age should be immersive. A toddler like ours would have no idea which word was the English word and which Spanish if told to "say it two ways". Entire conversations in a single language at a time, in context make much more sense. Little brains are primed for language aquisition, why not take advantage of it.

Hi Michael,

I agree with you 100%. I came to the Untied States when I was ten years old. It took me six months to start speaking English fluently. Learning was very easy because I lived in New York and heard the language every single day. After mastering English , I took up Spanish. I am not too fond of Dora, but I think parents that are serious about their children learning a new language must decide what is best for their particular situation. I do believe any exposure is better than none. I invite you to check out my blog at:

Hi Marzana,

Thank you for your comment. You are right , it is a good idea to learn a new language because the world is getting more versatile. The internet opened so many new doors for effective communication, we do not have to travel far to be in touch with someone.
