Do You Contact Companies Directly?

Since I started doing product reviews about 6-7 months ago, I've pretty much only contact companies via email or their websites.

Has anyone actually called a marketing dept of say: Sony, Bissell, or any other large companies to work with them as a blogger?

Did it work for you? Did they even know what a blogger who does product review was? What was their reception of your phone call like?

I've received a couple responses with phone numbers saying I should either call or write their marketing dept. Would you do that? Any suggestions as to how to approach them?

This is a new direction for me! Thanks in advance for any advice offered!

I have never called a company, but I have emailed plenty. Depending on the company/product it usually works. The biggest issue for some companies is whether or not you will take loaner products. If you don't some companies won't do it. Others will say they won't, but if they see your blog performs they will change their minds. A good portion of them will jump at it, if your blog fits their products.

I just send an email explaining what I want and why the product fits in with what I do on my blog. I also add a paragraph that includes links to similar posts I have written and some basic stats.

It's worked well for me! Just be honest and remember, the worst thing that can happen is that they say No.

I've just gotten a couple responses recently to contact their Marketing dept, and hadn't run across that before. I'm ok with a "loaner" if they pay shipping both ways. I've never done it, but as long as they pay the cost, I'm good with reviewing it.

As for emailing, I've spent entire days emailing companies so I've got those emails pretty down pat, but personalize them to each company.
