It seems like lately a lot of bloggers are enabling comment moderation on their blogs. If you moderate your comments, what are the benefits of doing that? Does it reduce spam that much? Do you think it makes your readers write a more honest response? Are you heading off any negativity that may arise?

I don't have comment moderation on my blog but I was just wondering what the benefits are.

I turned it on because I was getting spammy comments, like, "great review and come and see this new book published by (publisher) at (link), or even a good comment with a link to some shopping site. I felt uncomfortable with some of the links. I have put out a few of these, but I want the majority of the comments to be noncommercial.
I have comments moderated on a couple of blogs, an unmoderated on a couple of others. Depends on how hard I'm getting hit with spam. So far, the problem really has only been at one, and that has been for our ranch. I am also getting to the point where I moderate comments on profiles. I don't want people coming to my profile, just to tell me what they have to offer. I want to get to know you, personally, not your business, first.

I know this may sound harsh, but I get so tired of "come check out my opportunity, I'll make you rich". It gets out of hand. I do need to go back through my profiles and inform visitors, so that visitors to my profiles will take note (hopefully).

Happy Trails ~
I do both.

On my personal family blog I do have comment moderation enabled. The reason for this is my parents, grandmother, aunts, cousins and friends all read this blog and possibly the comments to. I don't want them having to read comments from nasty people and spam ... not that I get very much, but it's one less thing I have to deal with.

I see that some people who have commented here have the option to only moderate the first comment made by a person, I'm guessing you don't use Blogger b/c I can't seem to find that option, but I'd definitely rather do that than moderate every comment.

On my crafting and party planning blogs I don't enable comment moderation b/c 99% of comments that have been posted have been solely about my blog posts ... so far, fingers crossed.
Yes, it does cut down on the spam dramatically.
