I am trying the meme Friday Follows which is a linky that people enter their blog on, follow the hostesses and then as many others as they would like to. Once you follow someone, you leave a comment letting them know it and then they follow you back.

A few things that have accidentally worked for me:

Consistent postings, posting on topics you & your followers are interested in, commenting on other blogs

Memes & online challenges are great - Find a couple you like, play along & post your link. Be sure to visit others who are participating

Giveaways

Interviewing people your followers would be interested in

I'm doing Menu Plan Mondays and 5 Question Friday linkeys...Monday and Friday are now the days I get the most readers, and I often add followers on those days too.
I'm active here as well The Blog Frog and CafeMom. Networking sites bring a lot of visitors to my blog.
Also just reading and commenting on other blogs brings a lot of traffic.
I found an awesome way to track how much traffic my blog is getting...I use Google Analytics, which is free and gives you tons of information on not only how much traffic your blog is getting, but where it's coming from.

Twitter parties net more followers there and I think by default that leads them also to the blog sometimes.

I hosted my own giveaway and almost doubled the number of followers in a week.
Leaving comments and following other blogs.
Joining groups on here has helped alot too.

I notice on the days I have an interesting title on my post I always get more hits. I think when people see a title that is interesting, they want to check it out.
