I love to blog and have alot of fun doing it BUT....I want to make some money, too! I currently use Google AdSense and My Savings for ad campaigns, which I utilize but I've only made $10 in 5 months!!! I just started doing product giveaways to drive/increase my traffic.

How can I make money at blogging? Are there some great advertising secrets I am missing? Please help!!!

oh and to clarify I am not against people accepting products that they review and/or also host a giveaway with or for people who want to giveaway a product they just love. I just don't think it's a good long term plan to build one's overall blog traffic and readership, from what I've heard & read based on those who have done it.
I understand what you're saying. I just meant that I was still very new and just tested the waters with 2 giveaways recently. My goal is to get some new readers with the giveaway, hook them with my great content and keep them....but giveaways is not the only way to get new readers. I know. You're right, it's a gimmick anad I don't plan to use it solely but I do want to reward my current readers with giveways, too. Right now, I am only planning 1 giveaway every 6 weeks or so. Thanks for the great information!!!!

Hi Elizabeth,

This is a great question. Starting out, Ad Networks probably aren't your best bet. When you are small, the best thing you can do is "carve out a niche", then use direct advertising and affiliates to monetize that niche. The more precise the niche the better like "Moms who like to drink coffee and drive blue cars".

Then to start monetizing, place a link on your site that says "advertise here" and create a page that tells potential advertisers all about this great niche they are going to reach. Or grab affiliate items from Commission Junction or Amazon.com (I can tell you more about this if you are interested) that you think your niche will be interested in.

As you get larger, you can become more general, and you can get into high paying ad networks. Let me know if that helps.

I got all my information from awesome bloggers at the BlogStar Community, a Premium Community all about blogging, from TheBlogFrog (disclosure, I am one of the founders of BlogFrog :). Talk soon!

I'm not sure of the rules on this forum, so I didn't want to just recopy everything I said.

I am in the same boat as you, so this was great for me to read. I just signed up for socialspark.com but I am not sure if my blog has been, approved yet or not? It keeps saying I have no offers. I would love to create some revenue for myself but also love to give my bloggers great stuff to win. I want them to come to my blog and be opened up to tons of other blogs, you know? My blog is theycallmemommy-chae@blogspot.com. If anyone would like to read it & leave me some hints ;)

Pinterest! Seriously, Pinterest has been a HUGE factor in driving a LOT of traffic to my blog. When writing my posts, I now include pictures specifically marked with what my topic is about along with my website on the bottom. I have had a LOT of followers come and connect via Pinterest. I have one post that was from a year ago and because of Pinterest, it has had over a 100,000+ hits - that's not an error. I have really had THAT many. You can also go back to Pinterest to see what people are pinning by putting in: http://pinterest.com/source/"YOURBLOGNAME".com/ {inserting your own URL} and then you see what people are pinning. I figured out what pictures they were pinning and went back to old posts and re-did all the pictures so that my blog name was on them. It has increased my traffic a ton.

I also use Blogher but they are picky and take a LONG time to get approved - but pay well. I have not used Social Spark at all, although I've been approved. I have a major topic and will only accept giveaways on my topic or writing for Social Spark for my topic only and if not, I don't use them. I don't want to inundate my readers with an overwhelming amount of sponsors or junky giveaways.

Lastly, I did a 31 day challenge and that also increased my traffic by 10X in one month and is has been steady every since. Blogging for 31 days in a row is a LOT of work, but it has rewarded me with a lot of traffic - meaning more pageviews and money.  Hope this helps!

Organizing Made Fun

I like blogvertise and socialspark-- of course reaching out to PR and companies who contact you and building relationships helps a lot. you can offer to write sponsored posts and/or advertise. offer some sort of deal for advertising like 2 motnhs for the price of one, or even free advertising for a month. the most important thing is to have a legitimate following. if you have readers who keep coming back, and more who get hooked on your blog; you are on your way.

sometimes i make $60/week blogging, but it is a lot of work. other times it's 20/week or less. it's really not consistent for me. i reach out and try to get sponsored posts and/or sell ad space. i have found that works best for me personally.

good luck all; whatever you decide to do.

I would love to increase my readership as well. I am finding it a bit difficult. I do like coming on to the site and reading other blogs.  I have found some great blogs. I normally keep track of the blogs that I join and try to comment on them at least once every other week until I just never hear from them.  I love having tons of blogs to read and respond too.
