I met a woman a few weeks ago who had a dramatic birthing experience. This is her first child and the birth was not the way she wanted- natural with no medical intervention. Instead, she had a typical hospital birth including drugs and timed for the doctor's convenience. Now she is suffering severe postpartum depression because she was unaware that she had choices- even in a hospital setting. It broke my heart and made me want to instantly be her friend and sister in motherhood. I wanted to take her under my wing and share with her the things I have learned in birthing my two daughters. With both of us almost in tears, I asked if I could give her a hug and share with her some words of encouragement.
Now, I’m strongly in favor of natural births: at home, in a birthing center or even in a hospital setting with a midwife or doctor. I endorse limited intervention.
