Hi fellow bloggers! Does anyone else have Wordpress that wouldn't mind helping me quickly?
I recently upgraded Wordpress.com to have my own domain name without wordpress.com in the url.
I'm now thinking about switching over to Wordpress.org to have more control over my site, plugins, etc. I found an article that takes you through the steps for the transfer. Is this a huge pain? Also, I'll have to pay to use one of their hosting providers, Bluehost, which is like 3 something a month. Will that be on top of what I'm going to be paying yearly for the Wordpress.com upgrade(99), or do I cancel that?
Sorry this might be silly--I'm not the most computer savvy!
Hi Emily -
If you move to Wordpress.org you will have to pay for monthly hosting. Yes, it is on top of the Wordpress.com upgrade. Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org are two separate blogging platforms.
You will also have to move your entire site (fairly easy to do) to Wordpress.org and you will need to upload a blogging template. Many are free, but the best ones cost to use. It is a one-time fee.
We hope this helps. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
Long story short: It's a huge pain in the ass unless you're prepared for it to be a huge project. I admin websites for businesses (and all of their marketing stuff, digital marketing, PR, etc) - but a few of them are built on wordpress.org. While it is great for customization and integrating everything- it is a lot of work to constantly maintain them- the plugins need to be constantly updated, modules can break if you aren't super careful about it, etc. Your website can go down if your host has a hiccup.
BUT- on the upside there are some awesome parts, too. The plugins, despite needing to be updated, are really cool. So much cool stuff you can integrate into your site. You will have to know how to code to do this. If you aren't fluent in coding, it's going to be either a huge thing to learn it, or you'll need to pay someone to help you out.
You can completely customize every part of your site.
That said, I really feel like spending that much time working on a site should be left for medium to large businesses- when you can get pretty much the same features on wordpress.com and just do the $250 premium upgrade- and you get a pretty decent custom site without the major headache of setting up a wordpress.org site.
