Live a Greener Life With Sustainable, Reusable Water Bottles and Coffee Cups

I am trying to do my part to live a greener life. I am in no way an expert in living a more sustainable lifestyle, but I am doing little things that make a difference. I am already a stickler when it comes to recycling. My family and I no longer buy water in plastic bottles. Instead we filter our tap water and…

Why Kids Books Are Great Holiday Gifts + Giveaway

The season of gift-giving is quickly approaching! Not only does this remind us how quickly the year flew by, it also puts our feet to the fire to think of the best gifts for our friends and family. For kids, there is all manner of toys, games, and gadgets that are already marked down to grab our attention. While the stores are tempting us to reach for our wallets for the latest must-have toy, be sure to also keep books among your gift-giving traditions.

When my kids were young they could count on books sprinkled under our Christmas tree. We would tuck them in between packages and also placed front and center, especially the ones with the prettiest covers. Inevitably every year the books would outlast any toy our kids received. We hope they pass our book giving tradition along to their children.

One book we absolutely love and believe should be added to any gift list is Where Will You Go, Rickey Jo? Wonderfully written by Tom Murdoch and illustrated by Marina Veselinovic, the bedtime story will take your little ones on an adventure through rhythmic and rhyming verses and distinctive illustrations.

Bedtime stories provide not only a bonding experience between you and your children at the end of the day, but they also provide another opportunity for your kids to improve on their reading, pronunciation, as well as stoking their clever imaginations. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics published a policy statement about the importance of reading aloud to your children. It helps them increase their language, literacy, and social-emotional skills. Reading with your children is an all-around boon to their child development.

In Where Will You Go, Ricky Jo, the adorable, personified Chihuahua finds travels through a garden, flies an airplane, and even on the top of a snowy mountain only to discover his favorite place of the night is his bed. One of the best parts of the book on the front bookplate is a note to pass the book along after reading. This also provides the opportunity to show your children the gift of passing along books to their friends or even place them in your local area’s Little Free Library book exchange.

Bedtime reading gives your child a chance to ask questions, to connect with you (your voice) and creating a habit that allows your child to destress, feel safe and fall asleep.

We read every single night to the kids. It helps us all wind down from our day and set the tone for a peaceful evening.
