We have 7 children. No, we do not homeschool. We live on a farm in Benson, Vermont where we welcome parents from NYC (and everywhere) to bring their children for a relaxing, get-away-from-it all vacation. Our children have chores, own their own goats and cows, show at fairs, play outside, love to go sledding, ride bikes and teach their new visiting friends to love it too.

Crutches again!

Posted on February 23, 2009 at 12:46pm 0 Comments

Brought our daughter to the ER for her foot. Terrible pain and she has a VERY high tolerance forpain. They said she has an impaction fracture on Saturday and now they say she doesn't. So? How does anyone explain why she can't walk on it? It's not swollen or black and blue like a sprain. I just don't know which way to turn!

Need ideas on how to get the word out there.

Recent visitors suggested I try to market our guest house to parents of Autistic children. Their child loved the animals and whole atmosphere of the farm. The parents were able to relax completely in the guest house and cook and do things whenever they wanted. They had been searching for 'hands on' activities for their child. He was able to feed the cows, visit the llama and bond with the goats. If anyone has any ideas how to target such an audience, I would greatly appreciate it. Or if… Continue

Wow, you have quite a menagerie there :) The only non-cows we have are 2 working dogs and 2 cats. We did have a few geese and some chickens but the dogs got to them :( so we decided to not go there again!

Lots of wildlife though - blue tongue lizards, goannas, brown and red belly black snakes, the occasional green frog, grass parrots, rosellas, magpies, currawongs, gallahs, sulphur crested cockatoos, foxes, hares, rabbits, kangaroos, echidnas....

We don't have any stud cattle apart from the bulls which we buy in. We're called "commercial" breeders down here.

We don't have a milking cow either. Husband keeps threatening but it comes down as to WHO is going to do the milking LOL.

We raise beef cattle - mostly Angus cows and Angus, Gelbviegh and Santa Gertrudis bulls. We also grow a bit of grain in the process of improving our pastures, mostly with oats although we have grown wheat and barley too. Our land is mostly sloping/hilly so not ideal for broadacre farming, but great for grazing.

What do you raise on your farm?

Yes, the girls had a great day - it was hot so they and their friends were in and out of the pool all day. As this is our summer vacation the children have six weeks off. We have four terms here of 10 weeks each with approximately 2 weeks off in between terms (except end of year like now). Our school year also follows the calendar year which I don't believe yours does? Brrr ice hey!? It was over 40celsius here today (about 104F)...

Its very hot here at the moment - typical end of year weather - and we're gearing up for new year celebrations. My daughters have their birthday on new years day so its all stations go here :D Have a great NYE and cheers to 2009!
