Lazy Parent or Teaching Independence?

Originally posted on Just Playing House.

I'm a lazy parent! At least where it counts. This realization was inspired by a friend's similar confession. That may seem like a really strange thing to say, but it's true. I try not to do for my children as much as possible. That means…

Communication After Death - My Signs From Cameron

This blog was originally posted at Just Playing House.

It is every parent's worst nightmare to lose a child. I remember being angry at myself for even letting the thought cross my mind. It was unimaginable. Luckily this didn't happen to people like us so I had nothing to worry about...until I did. By the time I let myself believe it was a possible outcome that night, it already was the outcome. He was too far gone. No longer did I…

4 Most Meaningful Condolences

Originally posted at Just Playing House.

The topic of death makes most people uneasy. When it is the death of a child, even more so. It's no surprise that knowing what to say in those moments is rare. We all tend to go with the standard, "I'm so sorry for your loss". It's just what you say.

This is a topic I wish I knew nothing about. When Cameron…

Losing a Child - Our Story

Originally posted on Just Playing House.

My son went to bed a normal boy. Excited that Santa was on his way. Hopeful that in the morning, he would find everything he wanted under the tree. He would have! I never would have guessed that 2 hours later, when he woke up sick, it would be the start of my worst nightmare.

Every waking moment I replay that night over and over in my mind.

He had a very low grade fever that…

4 Things I Hate About My Christmas Birthday

Originally published on Just Playing House.

You guessed it! I have a Christmas birthday. Born December 25th.

What I've learned through the years is that it's not that unusual. I've met quite a few people that share that day with me. My guess is most of us are pretty indifferent about it. It's really all we've ever known. Yet for some reason, the world is fascinated by it.

In spite of my indifference, there are certain…

5 Experience Gift Ideas for Kids

Originally posted at Just Playing House.

As I look around my kids rooms, I am constantly reminded that we need to do a major clean out! I mean MAJOR! This is especially true for my daughter Melia (age 4). We are lucky to have a clear path to walk to her bed. Night wakings have become hazardous to our health!

For my own safety and sanity, I love experience gifts for kids! Let’s be honest, our kids don’t…

8 Ways I'm Turning Into My Mother

Originally posted at Just Playing House.

My sister and I always had a pact that we'd have each others backs as we got older. Kind of like an accountability partner. Making sure the other didn't do, say, or turn into something that we had classified as bad.

This pact was born in the wake of seeing a stringy, black hair growing from our great grandmother's chin. We just couldn't fathom not having someone right there to tell us…

Newborn Milestones - Growth

Originally posted at Just Playing House.

Newborn milestones are exciting! Seeing the new baby grow, learn new things, and experience the world. However, for this mama, they are also sad. Sienna is our 3rd baby. She will also be our last. So with every new milestone, I am reminded that it is also the last.

Today I began the sad process of cleaning out our newborn clothes. Sienna is now 4-months old. Only recently did she…

Why I Hate My Husband At 3 AM.

Originally posted at Just Playing House.

It's 3 AM (or any other time in the middle of the night). The baby starts crying. She is awake for a bottle. I lay there for just a second to let my body get used to the idea that I'm about to wake up and climb out of a comfy bed. Ugh!

The baby is still in our room so I don't have to go far. She cries a little bit as I change her diaper and get her bottle ready. I usually sit on our bed…

12 Rewards for Kids

Originally posted at: Just Playing House.

I know the best way to reward kids is to praise them immediately following the good behavior. This recognition is a given at our house. However, sometimes I like to randomly surprise them and go above and beyond to recognize what they've done. Especially when they aren't expecting it!

Call me crazy, but I'm tired of rewarding my kids with time to play video games or watch You Tube. Our…

5 Parental Frustrations

Originally posted at Just Playing House.

When you become a parent you expect there will be moments that drive you batty. I have to admit, these are 5 parental frustrations I never expected. Though, I'm guessing they are pretty universal.

  1. Where are your shoes? - Every day I ask this question at least twice! They never remember where they took them off. And somehow the shoes end up being in two…

Wendy's Kids Meal - Best Toy!!

Originally published at www.justplayinghouse.com.

Today was one of those days. I had a block order to get out before the post office closed (in 2 hours). While trying to put the package together, the baby was hungry and fussy. Of course I couldn’t get the label to print. Cameron (7) was begging me to play just one level of his Mario game with him. Melia (4) wanted breakfast and was whining she was was “super hungry”. I had not even…

We are Co-Sleepers...Sometimes

Originally posted at www.justplayinghouse.com.

It's become very obvious that I've given up all claim to my own room. To be honest, I'm questioning why we need a house with more than 1-bedroom! We are not co-sleepers. We don't even set out to sleep in the same room. It just sort of happens, mostly in the middle of the night.

I've gotten so I have left 2 little blanket beds on the floor already made up. These are for…

Swear Words at School

Originally posted at www.justplayinghouse.com.

On the way home from school, Cameron (7) told me the kids in his class were saying a bad word. Apparently it was in a song they were singing. He told me they just kept saying it, even though he told them they shouldn't say it. They just wouldn't listen to him.

My first thought? Swear words at school. I knew this would happen at some point. I'm really not too surprised.…
