Con Air

This past weekend, Elliott and I flew to Boston for the weekend.  For the most part, it was an uneventful trip.

If you’ve flown lately, you know what a hassle air travel has become.  There are the security lines, the overbooked flights, and the testy airline employees.  With a cancelled flight out of Kansas City, air traffic control issues in Chicago, and weather delays in Boston, it took us 13 hours to get to Boston, but only five hours to get home.

Am I Smart Enough?

I’ve been to Boston a number of times, but my trips mainly consisted of flying into Logan airport, renting a car, and driving out to the far western suburbs for work.  Downtown Boston was a blur of road construction, and Cambridge was just a blur across the St. Charles River.  So, I was excited to spend some time in the city.

The first thing I wanted to do when we arrived was go to Harvard Square and purchase a Harvard sweatshirt.  More specifically, a Harvard Law sweatshirt.  Ever…

What's A Shiksa To Do?

I am not Jewish.  I am of Anglo heritage with a strong Protestant past.  Although technically Catholic now, I was raised as a white bread Methodist.

However, I have many Jewish friends, some more orthodox than others.  The first time I visited one of my closest friends, I was confused as to why there were pictures of meat and milk on her kitchen cabinet doorknobs.  I looked in the cabinets and saw ordinary dishes, but wow, she had a lot of them!  It was a while later when…

The Little House That Love Decorated

Last year, in an attempt to make Hunter happy in her new country home,we bought her a playhouse.  I had always wanted one when I was little, and I thought it would be the perfect thing for a five-year-old feeling lost in the country.  After negotiating with Colby, I purchased a house, without the knowledge that it wasn’t a simple plastic playhouse that would snap together.  Rather, it was a wooden house…

A Bug's Life

My life has been reduced down to the level of a bug.

Bugs.  Lately, it seems to be the topic of every conversation we have.  What types of bugs do have?  What harm are they causing?  How to eradicate them?

Camp Cormorant

As I drive Elliott and Hunter around to their various camps this summer, I am reminded of the summer of 1988.  The summer I was a camp counselor at Camp Cormorant, on Big Cormorant Lake in Lake Park, MN.

A Call to Arms

Gardening is not just a hobby; it is a full-scale war with battalions to lead, enemies to conquer, multiple fronts to manage, and the unpredictable weather that can make or break a battle plan.  It requires, skill, strategic acumen, luck, and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears.

I, of course, am the Supreme Commander of the Allied Gardening Forces.  My army of corn, tomatoes, radishes, zucchini, and other equally important divisions fight daily to produce the most beautiful and luscious…

Heart to Heart

I’m having a bad day.  I had a bad day yesterday, and the day before.  I am feeling off my game.  And I don’t like it.

I spent yesterday afternoon in a cardiologist’s office.  For once, it wasn’t for my father, but for me.  Daddy has had a couple of sets of stents placed in the grafted veins of his heart.  The first round was in January, and again in April.  He is fine now and is feeling much better, but the effects of sitting in the cardiac unit of a hospital have shaken me…

Ice Capade

We have an ice issue in our house.  It’s an issue that involves laziness, denial, blindness, stubbornness, and principle.

Fake and Bake

When I think of the term “fake and bake,” I think of artificial tanning.  I’m all about fake tanning these days since last month I became the I’ve-got-skin-cancer-and-I’m-getting-a-chunk-of-my-back-cut-out-soon Sunscreen Queen.  My fake tanning isn’t going so well.  I suck at applying it evenly and my legs are looking a little streaked.  But, it’s better than the real thing.

But, today’s post isn’t about artificial tanning.  It is about an activity I suck at almost as bad as fake…

Fish Stick Friday

Fridays always remind me of fish sticks.  I’m not sure if it’s because the cafeteria at school always served fish sticks on Friday, (or macaroni and cheese) or because on Fridays we often went out for fish sandwiches.

I grew up in a predominately German Catholic community and the Lenten practice of meatless Fridays was observed all year long.  Which was perfectly fine with me since I love fish sticks…that little bit of minced fish cleverly encased in a crusty coating.  One of the…

And Then What Will I Do?

I am typing today’s post with sore and battered fingers.  No, I haven’tsmashed my thumb again.  Well…I did, but it’s OK.  I’ve been building fence and tomato cages today.  Finishing up my garden fence and building tomato cages was just two things on my lengthy list of to-dos.
