If you’re the parent of a child in elementary school, you are likely very familiar with the concept of the “classroom party”. As a mom of three, I spent many years helping to plan and organize these festive events for squirming, giggling kids. And I loved every single minute of it!
And then after my kids…Continue
I absolutely LOVE my local Whole Foods Store (if you can call an hour’s drive one way local). When you walk in the door, you are met with a HUGE produce section that looks alive. It’s almost like a giant piece of artwork. So many different colors, different textures, and different smells are just waiting for me…Continue

Usually during the months of March and August, I start seeing the TV commercials with the annoying bee (why does he have that accent anyway?) and the happy people telling us to get Claritin Clear. These commercials promise that you’ll be sneezing less, breathing easier and ready to work in the garden or play with…Continue

I’m not sure why, but “mail time” is a big deal in our house. When my son was younger and I was trying to think up kid-friendly chores for him to do, getting the mail and bringing it into the house was a favorite of his, especially if he was expecting a card with money from his aunt & uncle or his grandparents. Even my husband will regularly ask me “did anyone get the mail today”?…Continue

I think most people would agree that water is vitally important to good health. After all, our bodies are mainly comprised of it. And we need to replenish it frequently because it’s used by our muscles, organs and tissues and we lose water through perspiration and waste elimination. But while modern day society has embraced the concept of drinking water regularly, we have created a whole new set of problems for ourselves.
When I was a little girl, drinking water meant you needed a…Continue
Mealtimes are as different across the country as, well, families. Each family approaches mealtime in a way that works for their particular situation. Some choose a buffet style option where family members fill their plates at the stovetop or counter and then sit down at the table. Others choose a family style option where serving bowls or plates are passed around the table, each family member taking a portion of his or her choosing. And then there are other families, typically with…Continue

I have a confession to make: I was not always a Green Mom. Just like I wasn’t “born” being a mom, I wasn’t born being green either. Growing up, I ate vegetables out of a can, drank water out of the hose on hot days, and consumed waaaaay too much sugary cereal. As a teen, I sprayed too much hairspray from an aerosol can, threw things away without thinking, and drove every chance I got, even if I was only going down the block.
When I did become a mom, my attitude…Continue

Boy, what a difference a couple days make! This past weekend, I was so excited that temperatures were warm enough to run errands on my bicycle. Not so this morning. This morning, we were greeted with a wind chill of -14 degrees.
For those of you who are not sure what a “wind chill” means, that is the number assigned to what the temperature feels like if you factor in the wind. For those of us here in the Midwest, it just means brutal cold! And while yes, we should expect…Continue

During my many years of parenting, I have discovered there are many things I would prefer not to touch. Some of these things are pretty obvious – various bodily fluids, “icky” things like frogs (maybe that’s just me) and anything that could potentially bite me.
During flu season (I recently learned there is no such thing as cold season), there are some “not so obvious” things that I would prefer not to touch as well. These are those every-day items that we routinely touch without…Continue

Recycling is not a new concept to most people. People are now responding to the need for a greener planet by either reusing products around the home or recycling items they no longer wish to keep. People are doing a better job of rinsing out their plastic containers, glass bottles and aluminum cans for pickup by the recycling agency. More and more folks are bundling their newspapers and magazines for collection, rather than just throwing them away. But what about those items deemed…Continue

I was recently visiting a friend who was cleaning out her kitchen cupboards. It’s a bit too early for “spring cleaning” here in the Midwest, but she likes to thoroughly clean right after the holidays. She says it’s a “New Year” kind of thing – out with the old and in with the new.
As I was sitting there, chatting away and drinking my tea, I noticed that my nose started to itch. Actually, it started to burn a little bit and my eyes were tearing up. I asked her if she’d gotten any…Continue

I am a huge fan of The Biggest Loser TV show. To me, it’s not just about a group of people losing a large amount of weight and competing for a prize. It’s about so much more than that.
I am overjoyed that the group behind this show has finally decided to take on the matter of child obesity. It’s a sensitive subject and, so far, they have handled it beautifully.
Our children watch our every move. We are responsible for the food we bring into the home, how many times we allow…Continue

Now that the New Year is here, do you find yourself staring into the closet wishing you could fit into clothes that seemed to fit just a few months ago? Is your belt feeling a little tighter?
This is the time of year that millions of people resolve to lose weight. You’ve likely seen commercials for the latest weight loss products that feature celebrities. Typically, they involve purchasing expensive, pre-made meals or counting calories or points. Many people start these…Continue
