Nancy's Blog (24)

Hard Labor

Over the past few months, I’ve come to connect with some really amazing women through blogging. I think it takes awhile to find your place in the blog-world, just like it does with any other thing in life. And I’ll be honest and say that I really didn’t think this would be a means to developing friendships.

I’ve exchanged some really great emails with some truly wonderful people. And lately these emails seem to be about infertility. I guess I am just drawn to posts about it. Writing… Continue

New Demo

Another birthday is headed my way. On September 8th I will turn 46. No condolences are needed. Really.

Yes, there are things I don't like about it......

~ When I am filling out something online, I am now in the 46-54 demo.

~ Still getting my period. What's the point?

~ I feel like the wrinkle cream commercials are directed at me now.

The 50's are glaring at me. At 50 I can live with my parents in their "Over 50 Adult Community". Ugh. Shoot… Continue

Blogging Vs Self Marketing

I haven’t been a blogger for very long, really. Sixty posts to be exact. Very short career so far, however I’ve come to see that there are two kinds of bloggers out here:

1. The bloggers who write to share, vent and keep an online diary. Maybe make a few friends along the way. Get some creative ideas or insight. Be a part of a community of intelligent and diverse women.

2. The blogger who is more of a “get as many followers as I can by giving away lots of stuff”. They get… Continue

The Make or Break Teacher

My son is entering the 4th grade this year. His resume thus far includes 3 years of pre-school and 4 years of public school. This makes for a total of 7 teachers. We just received the name of his 4th grade teacher this week. The 8th teacher in providing his education.

Every single year I drill people I know about the upcoming teacher. How are they? How much homework do they give? Are they nurturing? How long have they been teaching? How old are they? It’s endless.

But what… Continue

Honored for My Wings

I received a call this morning from a good friend of mine. Her daughters came home from sleep away camp yesterday. When she asked them what they would like her to make for their first meal home, they announced “The Super Bowl Wings”. I’m so honored!!!

Every year a group of people I have known since I am 13 get together for the annual Super Bowl party and I make these wings. We are talking 4 bags of chicken wings here.

So I thought I would pass this recipe on to the… Continue

Because I Need More Sleep

Sometimes, I just really don’t know where my brain is. I think that it’s like a fuse. When it’s on overload the fuse snaps shut and the power supply is just not there.

Take this one…..

I wake up super early because my son has color war this week at camp. He’d like his hair to be blue along with some blue face paint. NOOOO problem! Whatever my little prince wants. I put blue lightening bolts on his little cheeks (face, thank you) and spray his hair blue. I’m super careful… Continue

Before the Blog

It’s now officially a month that I am blogging. Yes, a month. My first post , dated July 14th is titled “I Have an Addiction”. Little did I know then that post would start off a brand new addiction. Blogging.

I really do wish I had discovered “blogging” a decade or so ago. There are so many things I wish I could have preserved with words. Photos are great, as are videos. But nothing preserves an event or time better than your fresh thoughts, in words, on “paper”.

A post I… Continue

Did I Do the Right Thing?

So, I’m throwing this out there to you, because I’m not quite sure I did the right thing.

A little background:

My family is very close with another family. They are wonderful people and include us in so many of their celebrations. This weekend was no different. They have a lovely backyard with a pool, a dining area, a fireplace and an outdoor theater. It’s always just a FUN food fest there!

They were hosting a High School graduation party for their niece. Their… Continue

I Shut My Mouth (With a Glue Gun)

I’m heavily involved in my town’s football program. My son is in the PeeWee division, going into 4th grade. Tonight was the first night of sizing kids for equipment. My son came with me.

Tonight:

■When he wanted to goof around playing football (no equipment on) with kids 3 and 4 years older than him, I shut my mouth.

■When I saw him “guarding” a kid forty pounds larger that him, I shut my mouth.

■When I saw him get tossed by another kid who was 6 inches… Continue

Going With the Flow

1963 through 2008, me to my mom:

Very funny mom

2009 through ?, my son to me:

Very LOLish mom

In case you are not familiar with the term “LOL” (besides asking “where have you been?”), here is the definition from the Urban Dictionary:

lol

It’s original definition was “Laughing out loud” (also written occasionally as “Lots of Laughs”), used as a brief acronym to denote great amusement in chat conversations.

Now, it… Continue

It's the SImple Things

Life gets so crazy and we all tend to get so caught up in our own little worlds. I know for me that during the week I get little time for anything outstide of my work, son and household.

My parents retired about 3 years ago and moved to an adult community. They absolutely love it and now have a more active social life than I do. And even though they now live closer to me than they did before, I don’t get to see them very much.

I am lucky. My parents are still young and… Continue

Proud Supporter of Music in Education

DB-E800_LRG In my town, when you move up to the 4th grade, children can select a musical instrument to learn in school. They can pick from flutes, saxophones, oboes, bells, tubas, french horns, violins, violas, cellos, clarinets, trombones, the string bass, snare drums.

My little angel came home from school just before it ended in June, excited because he was given the instrument that was his first choice. Yay him!

The String… Continue

Dearest Santa

Dearest Santa,

I know it’s only August and I realize that I’ve never written you before, but I am thinking maybe it’s time I sent a letter in. I figure the more notice you had, the better. It seems to work well for my son, because you fill his list pretty accurately.

I do realize that in this economy it would be too much to ask for that 4 seat-er convertible I keep looking at, so I will keep it realistic. It can wait till things get… Continue

Can Someone Explain to Me......

Why do manufacturers skip over the size 9 for children?

Seriously, look at The Gap and search by size. Where’d the 9 go? And Old Navy? Same thing. It’s not just those retailers either. The chart on the left? (If you go to my blog you'll see the chart) That’s from Garnett Hill. There IS no size 9 for kids there either. Why is this?

I can deal with this size 9 thing when it comes to tops. Boys tend to like their… Continue

Cut the Apron Strings

I was sad when my son woke up one morning and told me he didn’t want to wear diapers anymore. Great, you’d think……who likes changing those things anyway? But it’s a huge milestone, especially when it’s your youngest or only child.

Gone, are the diaper bags. No excuse now to be carrying that large Kate Spade bag I had back then. Gone, is some of the dependency. (That last part is especially tough when you’re a smothering, needy mother like myself.) And forever gone was the crinkling… Continue

Best Potato Salad Ever

To me at least!

If you love stuffed baked potatos with bacon and cheese on it, you’ll love this one. This salad is great chilled for a barbeque or while still warm as a side dish.

Not the healthiest thing in the world, especially since I use more of the artery clogging ingredients, but it really is awesome!

Here's the… Continue

Weekend Lessons

Never leave your cup of coffee unattended with a dog (especially when it's a 7lb puppy). Caffeine does not fare well with them.

You WILL run into an ex boyfriend, eventually. Just hope that it's not while you're at the supermarket. Also hope you're not wearing a baseball hat with your grey roots STILL showing, or in your "I just got my period and feel like a complete mess" clothing.

Make sure to hit "save" now and then if you are working on a project on your laptop. Especially when… Continue

You Are Warned

I receieved my warning tonight and I thought I would pass it on to you.

August 2nd, 9pm is the kick-off to Shark Week.

There……you have it. I know I’m not alone in this Shark Week thing. I can’t possibly be, because the ratings are so high for the series.

Here is what the warning means in my household:

■There are no plans to be made that will have us home later than 8:30.

■There will be no sharing of the 60″ in the family room.

■There is no… Continue

So Here I Am...Blogging

I am new to blogging as you can clearly see by my very meager archive.

If you had asked me three weeks ago about blogging, I probably would have laughed at you . Who has time for sitting here and typing daily psychobabble when there is work, laundry, carpooling, house straightening, errands, homework, obligations and a shot at sleep to handle? And why would someone want to read about anything I have to say in the first place? To me, it’s up there with entering contests all day and… Continue
