Does it take your ages to find anything in your wardrobe? Maybe that’s because there is a big pile of clothes on a chair and falling onto the floor… Then again, do you find crumbs between the sheets when you’re trying to drop off at night? If any of these two instances are familiar, then it’s time to get in some house cleaners – either that, or give that bedroom of yours a big clean yourself.

Not only is regularly cleaning your bedroom hygienic, but it also makes you feel good when you enter the room. So, what are some of our best bits of advice for keeping your bedroom people-friendly? Well, here they are right here:

Tips for keeping your bedroom clean from a London Home Cleaning Service

1. Get rid of the dust. If you suffer from any kind of airborne allergy you’ll know that irritating the sinuses can cause sneezing and untold misery. Dust is quite a common allergy and if you have it then it’s essential to keep that bedroom of yours dust-free. Do this by hoovering every few days if you have rugs or sweeping if it’s hard-wood floors you have (leave mopping the floorboards as a monthly chore). Remember to get as far under the bed as possible! Give lampshades, curtains and blinds a quick flick over with a duster while you do the dresser surface and wardrobe doors etc. Or, lightly vacuum them on a low setting.

In addition, open the windows at least once a day in order to allow the air to circulate freely around the room. Any good house cleaner will also advise you to change the sheets once a week too in order to ensure there are no bed bugs and that they feel fresh and clean. Newly-changed sheets are wonderful to slip into at night.

2. Clear out your wardrobe. We don’t mean regularly, but maybe every six months or so. That way you will be able to find what you’re looking for. For many ‘decluttering experts’ a good rule of thumb is that if you haven’t worn an outfit for more than 12 months then it’s time to take it to the local charity shop. The benefit of this is that it allows you to wear your favourite outfits when you like because you now have them instantly to hand.

When storing the outfits that you have decided to keep ensure you hang all the clothes so that they’re facing the same way. This lets you flick through them in an easier fashion and makes your dressing choice quicker in the morning when you’re rushing off to work.

3. Always have a bin in the bedroom. Slip a bin under the desk or in a corner where there’s no risk of knocking it over. There are so many reasons why you need a bin in here. One is that this is where you’ll try on clothes you’ve just bought so you’ll need somewhere to put the tags and paper bag it came in (also the receipt if you don’t keep them).

You will also need somewhere to put the empty crisp packets or sweet wrappers after a session of late-night munching in bed. A good tip, according to one London cleaner we work with, is to keep extra bin bags at the bottom of your bin so you’re more likely to empty it and change the bag more often.

4. Clean your mattress every six months. Giving your mattress a good clean is essential if you use it to sleep on every night. It can hoard dust mites, dead skin cells, sweat etc after all…First vacuum the mattress front and back to get rid of any hair and crumbs etc. Next try and remove any stains using either home made (a mix of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and soap) or shelf bought. To get the mattress smelling fresh and to soak up any liquid from the stain removal you’ve just done, sprinkle with baking soda and leave for a couple of hours.

Better still, if you live in a ground floor apartment and have access to a garden, then take your mattress outside to let it soak up the sun and get some fresh air. This is an old house cleaning tip – but one which still gets spectacular results. Finally, cover the clean mattress with a (clean!) mattress protector.

5. Clean consistently. When cleaning the entire room, it can be easy to get distracted. By that we mean spending ages cleaning out your wardrobe and not get around to vacuuming the curtains, for instance. To avoid this clean in a clockwise (or anti-clockwise direction) around the room. This way you’ll make sure everything gets done by working your way around the room methodically.
