6 Common Heath Risks to Avoid During summer

Summer holidays are with us once again and it’s no doubt that you want to make the most of the warm weather by enjoying fun times with friends and family. Depending on where you live, some common fun summer activities include visiting the beach, going on picnics, hosting barbeques and going on vacation. However, as a result of the care-free mood, many people often forget about the various dangers that could plague you and your family during summer. From heat waves to food poisoning, here are 6 common health risks that you should avoid this summer:

  1. Drowning

Summertime is often synonymous with the beach and water-related sports such as surfing and swimming. However, drowning is also a common risk which often occurs during the warm summer months. So, how do you keep your family safe from this terrible risk? First of all, ensure that you get professional swimming lessons before stepping out into the water. In addition, make it a priority to only swim in areas that have a designated life-guard.

  1. Food-related ailments

Summer is an incredible season for food lovers. Not only are there fresh fruits and vegetables available, but also, summer is usually characterized by countless brunches, food festivals and barbeques. Unfortunately, contaminated food or beverages are also quite common and this can lead to severe health complications. In order to avoid this situation, ensure that you purchase all your food items from reliable suppliers. For instance, if you are hosting a summer barbeque, then you should get the good quality meat products from which offers the best variety of grass-fed beef.

  1. Heat stroke

The extremely high temperatures during summer can also lead to sudden heat strokes which are common in numerous areas. According to an article in the New York Times, each year on average there are 13 deaths from heat stroke, 115 heat-related deaths and 450 emergency room visits for heat-related illness in New York. The best way to avoid a heat stroke is by installing high quality air conditioning equipment in your home or office. In addition, you should remain hydrated at all times by drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day.

  1. Skin protection

Sunscreen is a staple item for any outdoor summer activities. Dark-skinned individuals are often deceived to believe that they don’t need as much sunscreen as their light-skinned counterparts. Despite the fact that dark-skinned individuals have a higher percentage of melanin, this doesn’t mean that they can’t experience sun damage during summer. Hence, if you are going to be outside for more than an hour during summer, then you should definitely apply adequate sunscreen on your exposed skin. You should invest in a high quality sunscreen lotion that works well for your skin.

  1. Fire hazards

The hot and dry climate during summer can easily result in spontaneous forest fires. In order to remain safe, you should always stay tuned to your local meteorological department for any warnings about possible forest fires. This will help you to evacuate in time so as to avoid loss of life and property.
