6 tips to help you stay healthy and look younger for longer

Aging is a natural and normal process that we all go through and should not fear. With age also comes wisdom and a sense of stability and accomplishment that enrich your life. But modern society puts a great deal of importance on the way we look, so people feel an increasing pressure to maintain a youthful appearance for as long as possible and some even go to extreme lengths to achieve this goal.  

Although there’s nothing wrong with trying to look your best, sometimes people forget that not everything revolves around physical aspect and beauty is a completely subjective concept. What truly matters is taking care of your health and overall wellbeing. After all, the healthier you are, the younger you’ll look and feel. Because being young is first and foremost a state of mind, not something you can quantify based on aesthetic features. 

While you can’t turn back time or trick it like Dorian Gray, there are plenty of ways to take care of yourself so you can look amazing and feel great at any age. Making wise lifestyle choices is the safest and most efficient way to age gracefully and become your best version. These useful tips will try to guide you on the right path: 

Focus on what you eat

Beauty comes from within indeed, but not only in terms of attitude and character traits. The same rule applies when it comes to the food you consume. There’s a common belief that you are what you eat, and although there’s no risk of turning into a carrot or any other type of food, having a healthy diet is still extremely important. 

Food is the body’s fuel, so it makes sense that high-quality nutrients are essential to maintain yourself healthy. You won’t find these nutrients in junk food or processed products however. So, you must turn your attention to whole foods instead, lots of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats that will help you care for your body from the inside out. Needless to say, sugar, caffeine and alcohol are all on the naughty list.

Be a sunny person, but stay out of the sun

It’s a well-known fact that sun exposure causes photoaging and increases the risk of developing skin cancer. There’s been extensive research concerning the damaging effects of the sun on the skin. Studies have shown that UVA and UVB rays are responsible for approximately 90% of aging signs, so it’s a no brainer that lying in the scorching sun for hours is not a good idea. However, science also tells us that vitamin D is essential for the optimum functioning of our bodies, and vitamin D also comes from the sun. 

So how do we balance these two aspects? Researchers advise to spend no more than 15 minutes a day in the sun, to get the very necessary vitamin D. After that, you should put on a good sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and go about your day. 

Build an effective skincare routine

If healthy food can help improve your aspect from within, skincare can do the other part. Creating a good skincare regimen can make a big difference in the way you look. Of course, different people have different skincare needs, but cleansing, exfoliating regularly, moisturizing and using SPF pretty much cover the basics for everyone. 

If you’ve got the essentials figured out, you can introduce additional products that will help you maintain a youthful look, such as antioxidants or prescription treatments. But keep in mind that switching up products too often can have the opposite effect, so be cautious and do a patch test first.   

Consider cosmetic treatments

All the care in the world can’t stop time and gravity from leaving their mark. So, if you’re not happy with what you see in the mirror anymore, there’s a wide range of cosmetic treatments that can help you regain your youthful appearance and boost your confidence. Both men and women can see amazing results from the latest treatments in the cosmetic field. 

If you’re dealing with skin issues such as hyperpigmentation, broken capillaries, sagging, loss of firmness and others, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t give cosmetic procedures a try. Obviously, you should talk to a professional in the domain about what’s the best course of treatment for you before making any decision. 

Exercise regularly

Our bodies need movement because humans were not created to be couch potatoes. Working out regularly is a must for your physical and mental health. Daily exercises can increase blood flow and oxygen level, help you lose weight, strengthen your muscles and bones and also improve your mood. 

You don’t necessarily have to go to the gym to work out. You can exercise at home, run in a park, start cycling, swimming or whatever type of physical activity you prefer. What’s really important is to create a workout routine that is suited for you needs and stick to it. Being consistent with your workout sessions will slows down the aging process and make you feel a lot happier. 

Take beauty sleep seriously

Beauty sleep is not a fairy-tale myth, but a scientifically proven fact. The quality of sleep has a strong and visible impact on our aspect and general health. Our bodies need deep and restful sleep to regenerate and work at an optimum level. But due to our hectic lifestyles, lack of sleep has become a modern-day epidemic and most adults are far from getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep each night. 

Sleep deprivation not only ages you in time, but it also causes brain tissue loss and can put you at risk for serious health issues such as heart disease, diabetes or strokes. That should be more than enough to make you rethink your schedule and rearrange your priorities. You can surely make a few changes to sneak in a few more hours of sleep at night.
