A lot of people think that oral health isn’t vital for their total well-being. They don't even realize that poor oral health leads to severe health problems, like heart disease or diabetes. If you want to save your teeth and be healthy, you should maintain good dental health. It implies the well-being of your teeth (enamel especially), gums, tongue, and other mouths’ surfaces. Many people forget about enamel, but it’s a vital part of oral health. It helps to protect the inner areas of teeth, known as dentin and pulp.

Keep reading and learn how to keep your enamel strong.

1. Brush your teeth

Regular tooth brushing helps remove plaque that contains bacteria, which leads to tooth decay and demineralization. Many dentists recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day. It may prevent plaque buildup and prevent many oral diseases, like tooth decay, gum disease, abscesses, etc. Some of these diseases are life-threatening, that is why it’s better to keep teeth clean, rather than have severe health problems.

2. Limit sugar intake

Many people believe that sugar is harmful, but they are wrong! Adverse bacteria cause a lot of dental problems. These bacterias feed on sugar from foods and beverages, in turn, make acids. Sourness wears down your enamel, which leads to tooth discoloration, sensitivity, cracks and chips, pain, etc. You should limit sugar intake to prevent dental problems. If you want to replace sugar, try artificial sweeteners, but the best decision is to replace all sweetened beverages with plain water.

3. Use fluoride toothpaste

A lot of dental specialists recommend using fluoride toothpaste because it has a giant number of benefits: from tooth whitening to tooth decay prevention. This type of toothpaste helps to strengthen enamel and prevents bacteria buildup. In turn, it prevents teeth from demineralization. If you want to try it, you should ask your dentist if it fits you.

4. Eat a healthy diet

Try to maintain a well-balanced diet that contains enough calcium. This mineral helps us to reduce acids in the mouth and strengthen teeth and bones. Some different foods and beverages contain calcium, but the most popular are dairy products (milk, cheese, etc). If you don’t want to have more calories during the day, you should try low-fat or even fat-free products.

5. Avoid dry mouth

Dry mouth or xerostomia is a medical condition that implies a lack of saliva in your mouth. This condition happens when your salivary glands don’t make enough saliva. Saliva helps you to prevent tooth decay, bacteria growth and helps to get away with food debris. Lack of saliva may affect your overall health, that is why you shouldn't neglect this problem. Ask your dental specialist what you can do about this problem. In most cases, dentists recommend to suck sugar-free candies or chewing gums, use special mouth rinses, or even take medicine.

6. Stay hydrated

Water is the most important beverage during the day. Up to 60% of the human adult body is water. In general, a person should drink at least 3 liters per day. Plain water has 0 calories and sugars. It helps us to remove harmful substances from the body.  You should try to replace all sugary drinks with plain water. It will help you to reduce calories during the day and acid in the mouth.

7. Don’t skip regular check-ups

Good oral hygiene requires regular check-ups. It is vital to prevent severe health problems or to treat them in the early stages. Many dental problems have no symptoms, but they can affect your oral health. If you have any changes in your mouth you should contact a dental clinic.

The bottom line

People should know that most dental problems are caused by poor oral hygiene, and enamel problems aren’t an exception. Mineral loss is a common problem, fortunately, there are a lot of home remedies to strengthen it.
