The foods you eat have a big impact on your health. It can affect your skin, energy levels, gut health, and everything in your body including your vagina. Eating a diet high in probiotics, antioxidants, and low-sugary foods can be beneficial for your vaginal health. But not all products are helpful in keeping bacteria balanced down there. If you want to promote your vaginal health, you need to avoid products that can take a toll on your vaginal health. 

Below are 7 foods that can be detrimental to your vagina. 

1. Processed foods 

Processed foods often contain unhealthy levels of added sugars, fat, and sodium. The ingredients make your food taste better, but too much of them in your diet can worsen your immunity. When your immunity becomes weak because of your nutrition, this can lead to bacterial overgrowth in your vagina. This can cause unpleasant symptoms like itching and infections like bacterial vaginosis or yeast infection. 

To promote a healthy bacterial environment in your vagina, try to avoid processed foods. This can help you strengthen overall and local vaginal immunity. 

2. Alcohol

Alcohol is detrimental to your health and can affect your vagina in several ways. Excessive alcohol intake can leave your body dehydrated. Dehydration affects the entire body including the vagina and may cause vaginal dryness. The risk of bacterial vaginosis is higher in women with vaginal dryness. Along with dehydration, alcohol worsens the function of your immunity. Both these effects of alcohol can put you at risk of unpleasant problems down there. 

There is nothing dangerous from having a few drinks now and then, but excessive alcohol can be potentially harmful. Moderate alcohol intake can help you ensure vaginal health and overall wellbeing. 

3. Sugar

Eating a lot of sugar can affect any aspect of your health. It increases the risk of obesity, overall body inflammation, and can make your vagina more susceptible to vaginal yeast infection. When you eat sugary foods, your vagina releases secretions that contain sugar. Yeast absolutely loves sugar, warmth, and moisture. For this reason, women with diabetes often suffer recurrent yeast infections.

It is normal to eat some sugar once a while, but eating it regularly can put your vagina at risk of yeast infection. Be mindful about the amount of sugar you consume to stay on top of your vaginal health. If you suspect that you have a yeast infection, contact a gynecologist to get this issue treated. 

4. Coffee

Drinking coffee may cause unpleasant side effects for your vagina. Coffee is a strong-smelling drink that can change the odor of all your bodily fluids. It also affects the smell of your vagina causing an unpleasant odor. Moreover, coffee changes the PH levels in your vagina. This can make you more vulnerable to yeast infections and other bacterial conditions. For women sensitive to caffeine, coffee may trigger stress which makes them more susceptible to infections as well. 

To decrease the detrimental effect of coffee on your vagina and normalize PH levels, be sure to drink enough water. This can help avoid the unpleasant consequences of caffeine.

5. Cheese

It isn’t necessary to eliminate cheese from your diet completely, but you need to consume it in moderation. Just like any dairy product, cheese can cause hormonal imbalances in your body because of high levels of insulin. Too much cheese in your diet can cause bacterial imbalance in your vagina increasing your risk of yeast infections and other bacterial conditions. 

To avoid these problems and preserve vaginal health, you need to eat cheese in moderation and balance it with other foods or water. It is recommended to avoid eating cheese as a separate snack. It is better to choose plain yogurt that contains probiotics and promotes vaginal health. 

6. Greasy foods

High-fat foods can make your vagina’s health worse. Greasy foods can cause foul vaginal odors that are linked to a higher risk of bacterial vaginosis. This happens because high fatty foods affect the balance of bacteria in the vagina. Because of bacterial vaginosis, you may experience symptoms like thin, gray, green, or white discharge, fishy vaginal odor, vaginal itching, and burning sensations during urination. 

7. Broccoli and asparagus

Broccoli and asparagus are bad-smelling vegetables that can alter the odor of your vagina. These vegetables are healthy so you are unlikely to want to eliminate them from your diet. It can worsen the smell of your vagina for a short period but after a few days, it will turn back to normal. If you don't take into account the unpleasant smell, broccoli and asparagus are extremely beneficial for your vaginal, breast, and hormone health.
