"Momma, Why Does that Girl Want to Kiss a Girl?"

Questions...questions...questions.
My ten year old has always been inquisitive. From "How does the tooth fairy know where we live?' to "How does the radio make music?" She has always inudated me with thousands of questions a day...some I'll answer 'cause I'm a smart mommy....Others, I make up answers 'cause I don't want to deal with it or I simply don't know.
Don't be hatin'...ya'll been there too.
My oldest child's last life questions was durning the MTV Music Awards. She wanted to watch the Jonas Brothers and I wanted to see if Britney was making a comeback...one sans a whoo-hoo shot or not involving a 5150 psychiatric hold.
The show sucked and I was half paying attention when she looked at me and said, "Momma...Why does that girl want to kiss a girl? And, what's a purity ring?"
WHOA!! What? Do I really have to deal with this right now? Maybe I misunderstood? So, I ask her to repeat the question. Which she did with that weird look in her eye like "Am I in trouble?"
Yep, same question. Geez, what a night. Here goes nothing!
Now, I know that this should have been my shining moment as a momma. But, I was weak. I didn't want the drama of a thousand more questions I really didn't want to answer. So, I gave the condensed version.
"Yes, Ray-Ray, that girl (Thank you Katy Perry for this moment) is singing about kissing a girl. You know that there are many types of different people and different families in the world that live differently than we do. It's not that they are bad people..or that there's anything wrong with them...they are just differernt than us. This lady kisses girls....and sometimes boys. And she is a person...someone's baby...that will one day have a child...and have to explain this question to her kids. We are all children of God...and we should not judge. We should love everyone like God loves us."
"The purity ring is a symbol that young men and women take that shows the world that they have chosen to wait and not have sex until they are married."
She then turns to me and gives me the strangest look...and with the most disgusted voice says, "Mom. I said I wanted to know why that girl was singing about kissing a SQUIRREL...not a girl." EWWWW!
So, I told my sweet daughter....that was a topic for Boris, Natasha and Bullwinkle.
I know nothing about "kissing a squirrel."

ha ha ha, lol. This is hilarious. Well, I'm sure at the time you would just like to crawl under a rock. I have 2 girls that are 4 & 5. Let's just say they are just beginning to ask, what is this? Why? So and so on. I have come to the conclusion that answering childrens questions is being witty, timing and just making things up as you go.

Thanks for the laugh!

Regina
