Adventures In Starting A Craft Business

Picture
A while ago I wrote a blog post about starting a craft business and taking the leap into becoming a 'Mumrepreneur'.  Several months later and I have had my first stall at a market.
It was only a small local market and it was a little quiet, but I think I did very well considering this. I got great feedback on the items that I had made, particularly my cards which was encouraging. My cards seem to have produced the most feedback, so this is something that I will continue to make in the future. The most satisfying thing of all is seeing items that you have worked hard to make up there on a stall at a market. Setting up the stall was an interesting experience, as I have never done it before and figuring out where everything should go on it was a bit of a challenge, but I got there in the end. And at least I have learnt for next time (and there will be a next time, see below for details.)

Bobby and Mike came along to help me unload, although this mostly consisted of Bobby dragging Mike around by the hand whilst I put things together, but at least he had a nice explore. A big thank you should go out to Salford Angels WI for organising the event, there were a lovely bunch of traders there.

My next stall will be at Eccles Makers Market on Saturday 12th November from 10am till 4pm. I am also hoping to do the market in December, so I will be putting my name on the list. I am particularly looking forward to the December one, as there will be a Christmas fair alongside, so I am sure it will be a fun day. I am not sure whether this will be a permanent career for me (we can see how the market next week goes) although it is not money reasons. As I have said in previous blog posts, I am not good at staying at home all day, especially now that Bobby is in childcare. We felt it was important to have him in childcare as he has not socialised with other children much - but it does get lonely at home during the day. If the sale goes very well, then maybe I can find a way to do the craft in a way that it more social - I will keep you posted.

If you are thinking of doing something like this for yourself, it is definitely worth a try. Even if it is just  hobby that you would like to try and sell via Etsy, it is always worth a try. You never know - it might just be a success. Are you a parent that has started your own business? I would love to hear your stories - let me know in the comments. :)
