The following is a portion of chapter one from The Melody of the Mulberries by Tonya Jewel. The excerpt was provided by the publisher Capture Me Books.
From THE CUSSIN' BIRD
The four brothers, Adam, Beau, Claude, and Dean found her before she found them.
“Miss Charlotte, Miss Charlotte,” Beau called. “We found us a cussin’ bird.”
“A bicuspid? Did someone’s tooth fall out?” the teacher asked. Ernest had just instructed the learners about the proper names for teeth. He had also taken advantage of the opportunity to discuss teeth cleaning. Hygiene was not a priority in the hills.
“No – a cussin’ bird,” Beau corrected.
“Well, not real bad cussin’ just hell and damn,” Adam interjected.
“Daddy said that we ain’t supposed to say hell and damn unless we’re talking about people goin’ to their Maker when they die,” added Claude.
Showgirl-Lottie-turned-Miss-Charlotte-the-teacher shook her head in confusion. “Boys, I am wantin’ to hear from just one of you at a time. I don’t understand what you’re rightly talkin’ about.”
