Dressing For the School Run: How to Style Effortless Looks

Photo by Josh Willink from Pexels

Getting ready for the school run every day can be a little manic. You’re most likely running around trying to get the kids ready while keeping the house under control too which leaves little room for making any time for yourself to get ready.

If you end up feeling a little mismatched on the school run, you’re not alone. Below, we’ll take a look at some simple styles you can pull together to look effortlessly chic in front of the other parents and feeling more like yourself again. While it’s not quite effortless, we’ve put the work into figuring out what works so you’ll look glam without spending too much time putting the outfit together.

Add Jewelry

Wearing a very basic outfit like a black shirt and jeans? Basic outfits can easily look more chic when you add simple jewelry. Rather than buying cheap jewelry that you have to replace so often, try investing in a simple silver or gold necklace and matching studs that will last much longer.

Adding this simple but classic jewelry will add an air of class to your outfit, while also giving you something to pass down to the little ones when they grow up.

If bold statements are more your style, try adding a chunky bracelet to your simple outfit or a beaded necklace from a vintage store.

Colour Tips

Part of what makes choosing an outfit take so long is trying to find colours that go together. As a general rule, it’s best not to have any more than 3 different colours in your outfit and to also choose colours that suit your skin tone. Some of the top colour combos that always work include:

  • Green and Yellow
  • Blue and Pink
  • Pink and Red
  • Camel and Black
  • Grey and Grey
  • Olive and White
  • Yellow and Grey
  • Black and White
  • Teal Green and Blue

Keeping it Simple

Keeping it simple can be a little harder than you would imagine, in which there’s a few pointers you should keep in mind when pulling together your outfit.

  • Avoid too many name brands and logos - While one branded shirt with unbranded jeans and plain sneakers could work well, it’s important to steer clear of using too many named brand items as it can do the opposite of looking effortless. To stay truly effortless, try avoiding logos altogether.
  • Don’t force yourself to wear something that doesn’t suit you - If trench coats are in style but you feel like they don’t suit you, don’t make yourself wear it as it’s not only how you look but the way you carry yourself and your confidence that makes your outfit too.
  • Choose Quality Items - While effortless means wearing basics that go well together, it also means you need to invest in a few higher-quality things over cheaper alternatives. Stay clear of see-through leggings and shirts that show your bra through as it could again have the opposite effect of looking effortless.

Choose One Signature Thing

An effortless outfit comes together when one thing stands out to pull all of your basic pieces together. For example, a plain outfit with a brand new pair of statement sneakers, a denim jacket, a simple red lipstick, some large sunglasses or a fancy long cardigan can really make all the difference.

Why not decide on your one statement piece the night before and leave that out so it’s ready to go. The rest will simply fall into place.

Overall, we know how difficult it can be to find time for yourself in the mornings when getting your little ones ready too. However, with a little forward planning and our top style tips at the ready, you’ll be looking effortlessly chic in no time.
