Everything You Should Know About Ovarian Cysts

Many women that experience dull pain on one side of the pelvis don’t even suspect that they have an ovarian cyst. However, you should remember that every symptom like pain or spitting may be a sign of a certain disease. That’s why you should always visit a doctor to avoid some serious complications.

When it comes to ovarian cysts, many women think that if they are benign, there is no need to monitor and treat them. Even if you regularly have cysts that disappear throughout the cycle, it doesn’t mean that one of them can’t burst or press the ovary too much. That’s why we gathered everything you should know about ovarian cysts in this article.

What are ovarian cysts

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacks that occur on the ovaries. There are a few types of cysts. As mentioned above, some of them may disappear during the menstrual cycle. However, some cysts may remain intact for a long period of time. Such cysts may grow and cause severe symptoms.

Symptoms and causes

The most common symptoms of ovarian cysts include:

  • Pelvic pressure
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain during bowel movements
  • Pain during sex
  • Lover back pain
  • Spotting
  • Bloating
  • Sudden weight gain

Some women with ovarian cysts may suffer from all these symptoms together while others may experience only one or two. However, it is important to make an appointment with the ovary pain specialist even if you have a few symptoms. Timely and proper treatment may help you get rid of these symptoms and prevent further complications.

Due to the fact that there are a few types of ovarian cysts, each of them has its own underlying cause. Functional cysts are usually caused by hormonal issues and usually disappear without any treatment. Endometriomas develop then the endometrium (the inner lining of the uterus) spreads to the ovaries and creates a cyst.

Ovarian cysts can also occur during pregnancy. Such cysts help support early pregnancy. However, if the cysts remain, they should be treated. You should also know that certain infections (including STIs) can reach the ovaries and contribute to the cysts’ development.

Complications

When the cyst doesn’t disappear throughout the cycle, it should be evaluated by the doctor. The reality is that an untreated cyst (especially if it grows too large) can cause severe complications. The most common of them are ovarian torsion and ovarian cyst rupture. Both these conditions require immediate medical attention and even emergency surgery.

Ovarian torsion can occur when the large cyst makes the ovary twist around itself. This causes severe pain and may interfere with normal blood flow. As a result, ovarian torsion can lead to tissue necrosis. The other symptoms of this condition may include bleeding, nausea, vomiting, and fever. In case you experience such symptoms, visit the emergency room as soon as possible.

Ovarian cyst rupture occurs when the pathologic cyst bursts and creates internal bleeding. It is important to understand that this condition is extremely dangerous since it can lead to infection. Cyst rupture usually causes sudden sharp pain that is accompanied by dizziness, vomiting, and fewer. This condition usually requires immediate surgical treatment.

Treatment options

In most cases, ovarian cysts don’t need any treatment. However, cysts that don’t disappear on their own should be treated. Hormonal therapy is one of the most common treatment options for ovarian cysts. Birth control pills suppress ovulation and this prevents the cyst’s development.

Surgical treatment can also be performed in order to remove ovarian cysts. Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure during which the surgeon can cup the cyst through the small incision. However, it could be performed only is the cyst is small. If you have a big cyst, the surgeon will perform laparotomy to remove it.
