We all love our dogs and we want them to live as long as possible and be healthy. Our canine companions count on us to take care of them and also to ensure that if they ever get sick we know how to make them all better.

Aside from taking your dog to the veterinarian for scheduled check-ups, here are ways to keep your dog healthy.

Feed Her Well

There is a vast variety of food options on the market for dogs. The most important thing is to try to find high-quality foods for her like lean proteins without fillers. Remember, the cheaper your dog’s food, the more probable it will not be the highest quality. While food cost does not necessarily equal all of the time, it can be a nice indicator for you.

Some dog foods are stored in refrigerators at your local pet store and in grocery stores. Those tend to be the freshest. Also, make sure that she has grains in her diet and vegetables. For example, if your dog experiences bouts of diarrhea you can feed her dog food with sweet potatoes.

Some people also make their dog their own food by giving them baked or boiled chicken, turkey and fish and mixing it with rice and mashed vegetables. Be sure to monitor your dog and see if she likes it. Also, check with your vet about the best foods they recommend for your specific dog.

One more thing: most dogs love having treats during the day. You can order specialty treats like Healthy Chews healthiest dog chews from the web or even buy really nice treats from a pet store. The variety of treats for dogs these days can be overwhelming. Ask your friends with dogs with their pooches love and try a little trial and error.

Give Her Plenty of Exercise

Like people, dogs need at least 30 - 60 minutes of exercise per day. If you live in an apartment seek out your local dog park or your local park where your dog can take a walk or run. Some people don’t like dog parks because sometimes there are sick dogs or overly aggressive canines. If your parks and recreation department doesn’t provide dog parks think about approaching sponsors like Bekins Moving Solutions los angeles movers that can help fund areas for dogs to roam and play.

If you have a large backyard make sure to send her out so she can get their heart rate up. If she likes to swim take her to your local lake or river so she can get exercise that way.

Dogs need exercise plain and simple. She needs to exert energy just like people so she won’t use her pent-up energy elsewhere like gnawing on your rug or favorite pair of shoes. To make things easier when you go for a run or walk take your pooch along.

Monitor Her Behavior

To make sure your dog is as healthy as possible be sure to monitor her behavior. If you see that she is a little lethargic or sleeps too much it is time to take her to the vet. If there is anything that is different in her behavior jot it down and make astute observations so you can tell your dog’s vet exactly what your concerns are.

Provide Dry, Comfy Surroundings

Some people who own dogs keep their dogs primarily indoors and some people keep their dog outside. No matter how you care for your dog ensure that they have dry and comfortable surroundings. If you are going to keep your dog outside be sure to choose a breed that is conducive to that environment that innately love the outdoors.

All dogs need safe, comfortable surroundings so make sure that their kennel or dog house isn’t in direct sunlight, has shelter from the elements like rain and snow and be sure to keep their area clean. That means cleaning up after them in your backyard. And, when your dog spends a lot of time outdoors make sure to spend as much time with her as you can as all dogs are meant to be companions and not solitary creatures.

Get Her Vaccinated

All dogs need to be vaccinated. Your vet will recommend your dog’s vaccine schedule, but as a rule of thumb make sure your dog receives the core vaccines - rabies, distemper, parvo, and adenovirus. Others are voluntary and may be given to your dog if necessary.

We all want our friendly pooch to live the best life possible. These tips will take you a long way in providing a stellar life for your canine companion for years to come.
