Finding ways to take some time away from both the stress and the hustle and bustle of our day-to-day lives can make all the difference to our family's well-being. With the right preparation, traveling with kids can be a wonderful experience where our children can see new places and learn new things about the world around them. On the other hand, traveling with kids can be a challenge, and so it is always important to consider where we are going, how we are getting there, and what we need to pack for our adventure.
Where Are We Going?
The first question we must ask when planning a trip is where we are going. Travel can look like hopping onto a plane and going to a faraway destination overseas. Travel can also look like us choosing a budget-friendly weekend destination that is accessible by hopping in our car. When it comes to traveling with kids, we can make memories that will last a lifetime no matter where we decide to go.
No matter what type of trip we are planning on taking, it is important that we choose a destination that will provide activities for our kids to do. The last thing we want is to discover there is nothing for our children to do and have them complain about being bored the whole time. This means we must do a little research on where we want to go in advance.
How Are We Getting There?
There are many ways we can get to our travel destination. We might choose to plug in our car at an EVgo station, we might choose to book a train, or we might choose to fly. What we need to bring will depend on how we get there. If we are traveling to a nearby city for a long weekend, we only need to bring a few necessities, but if we are traveling overseas for several weeks, it is important that we also pack a few small comfort items that will help our children stay relaxed during the trip.
What we pack can be influenced by how we plan to arrive at our destination. If we are driving, we can easily bring as much as we can fit in our car, while if we are flying, there are many more limitations on both space and the types of items we can bring. It is also critical that we know we will be able to return home. We don't want to drive somewhere and discover there is no car charging station when we need one or fly somewhere where finding a flight home may be difficult.
What to Pack?
Packing is frequently a balance of ensuring that we have everything we need while also avoiding bringing unnecessary items that will only cause us stress. First and foremost, we should allow plenty of time to pack. As a rule of thumb, it's a good idea to begin planning 2-3 weeks in advance. We should make a list on an app or jot down in a notebook anytime we think of something we’ll need. One tip for making packing easier is to make a list of everyone's outfits for each day of our trip to make sure we don’t forget something important, such as our children's underwear or their favorite shirt.
When we are planning a trip with our kids, it is important that we pare down what we bring as much as possible. The fewer bags we must deal with, the better. But in paring down, it is important that we don’t forget to prepare for things such as bad weather by packing appropriate gear. We will be glad we brought a mini umbrella and a cheap plastic rain poncho if we get caught in a sudden thunderstorm.
Planning is the best way to ensure that our travel plans go smoothly and that our entire family has a fun trip. We won't be stranded somewhere with our kids and no suitcases if we plan ahead of time. We are much more likely to have a successful trip if we know where we are going, how we are going to get there, and what we need to pack than if we don't and just hope for the best.
