When I was a kid I used to sit for hours and type on my mother’s typewriter. I memorized where the letters, numbers, and symbols were on the keyboard and tested myself on how fast I could tap, tap, tap out the alphabet without any errors. Because I worked so hard to memorize the keyboard I became a better typist, but I always wished that I had actually learned how to properly type.
For kids who are always looking to type faster when they are doing school work or just for fun there are several options for them. They can do like I did ages ago and teach themselves. That certainly isn’t as effective these days with apps and websites like Type Dojo that teach people how to improve their typing. It is important to note that Type Dojo doesn’t just teach kids how to type fast, but accurately as well. Who wants to see a page full of typing errors no matter how fast someone can punch keys.
What I love so much about Type Dojo is there are a variety of speed tests based on skill level and ambition. And you will receive a score telling you how you performed. The tests, I’ll warn you, are also quick addictive. I have taken several of the tests time and time again to see how I can perform and I always cannot believe how easy it is for me to make mistakes when trying to type quickly and it makes me want to continue to take them. You can take word and number tests. Not only will you see accuracy percentage, but you’ll also see how many words you type per minute (mine was dismal) and how fast you completed the test. The really fun part is you can automatically input your name and a PDF certificate will be generated and you can download and print it.
One of the things that TypeDojo recommends is that you sit up high, look directly at the monitor, put your hands on the keyboard and don’t look down. I would also add to relax because I found that every time I took the test I got flustered the more word or numbers I got wrong.
Typing well can be the difference between doing well in school or even getting a job. It’s not just clerical jobs that require quick typists, but many jobs that require writing, coding document creation, or simply content generation. Typing fast is an asset especially as tablets, laptops, and larger cell phones are the de facto technology and not the exception.
TypeDojo is a perfect, fun, and exciting way to improve your typing no matter if it’s for school, employment, or just for fun.
