Live a Greener Life With Sustainable, Reusable Water Bottles and Coffee Cups

I am trying to do my part to live a greener life. I am in no way an expert in living a more sustainable lifestyle, but I am doing little things that make a difference. I am already a stickler when it comes to recycling. My family and I no longer buy water in plastic bottles. Instead we filter our tap water and…

Keeping It Real: Letting Your True Self Shine On Instagram

Instagram influencers are under a microscope as every move can make or break one’s social media career. Consider the case of Caroline Calloway, an influencer who’s now making headlines as her former friend, Natalie Beach, has gone on to reveal the truth behind the Instagrammer’s success. In an essay published by The Cut, Beach wrote about her friendship with Calloway, revealing that she was the one who ghostwrote Beach’s lengthy Instagram posts and that Calloway got a book deal largely out of Beach’s writing. Because of the revelation, Calloway has attained one of the highest levels of internet notoriety and has become a cautionary tale for influencers who are hoping to make it big.

Being truthful on social media can be a challenge, especially if you’re an Instagram mom. Striking a balance between authenticity and the desire to present one’s best self on the Internet may seem like a constant struggle, but there are advantages to staying true to one’s self, even on social media. Here’s how mom bloggers who use Instagram can keep it real and let their true selves shine on the social media app.

Don’t lie

Moms deal with the constant pressure of having to do it all. This is why you’ll see most Instagram moms documenting all the ways that they can handle the challenges of everyday life while looking good at the same time. Social Media Daily states that being honest is the key to social media success, so despite the pressure, don’t claim to have done something just to gain likes and positive comments on your Instagram. For instance, don’t say that you’ve made that luscious-looking apple pie from scratch when you know very well that you got it from your favorite bakery. It’s only a matter of time before a savvy Instagram user can point out the misdeed, so be honest to avoid being “canceled” by your followers.

Ease up on the filters

The overuse of filters and photo editing apps is rampant on Instagram and most people have started looking like wax figures as they strive to achieve perfection. As an Instagrammer, it’s important that every photo that you upload should be well-lit and properly focused. However, don’t airbrush every wrinkle or cellulite, and definitely, don’t make yourself unrecognizable to your followers by over-editing your selfies. One example of an Instagrammer who’s doing it right is Angel Laketa Moore (@thatchickangel). The actress, comedian, wife, and mom shows what real motherhood looks like, and while she has the occasional glam shot in her Instagram page, most of her photos depict her everyday life in all its unfiltered glory.

Be selective about what you reveal

Being open with your followers can make you more likable, but as a mom, you also have to be selective about what you reveal. In a bid to become more relatable, some influencers have taken honesty to the extreme levels and have posted photos of their child on the toilet or a video of them ranting about getting bad service and the like. There’s such a thing as too much information, so if you think that a picture or info may embarrass you or your family members, don’t post it on social media. Be honest, but keep it classy and don’t post something that you may regret in the future.

Instagram can be a good tool for blogger moms to get their brand out there, and with millions of users on the app, it may be difficult to stand out above the rest. However, it’s important to think twice about what you post-- don’t upload a picture or say things just to get the likes. Authenticity allows you to get your message heard and it lets your followers understand what you’re truly all about, so keep it real and be yourself on social media.
