Have you recently decided to invest in window tint for your car, truck, or SUV?  After taking the plunge and spending your hard-earned money to obtain the many benefits of window tint, you are likely hoping it lasts for years to come.  While professionally installed window tint is known for its longevity, there are some things you can do to extend the life of your tint even more.  Here are some great tips for maintaining your car’s tinted windows.

How to Properly Clean Your Tint

When cleaning your tinted windows for the first time, make sure enough time has passed since application in order for the tint to be properly cured.  Washing your tinted windows too soon could result in damage.  It is recommended that you do not attempt any type of cleaning for 7-30 days depending on the climate within in the region you reside.  During the curing process, you may notice hazing or small water pockets; don’t panic this is normal. 

After the allotted period of time for curing has passed, you can safely clean your tinted windows.  Be sure you have a soft cotton cloth and rubber squeegee to assist in the process.  Be sure to choose mild cleaners like traditional soap and water or cleaners marketed specifically for cleaning tinted windows. 

ALWAYS avoid any harsh chemicals, specially those containing ammonia to clean your windows as they may cause permanent damage to your tint.  As a matter of fact, if your windows are only a bit dusty, you can easily clean them with a spray bottle of clean, warm water and a soft cloth.

Begin the process by pouring your cleaning solution into a spray bottle.  Spray the area lightly and clean/fully dry the window using a cloth or microfiber rag.  Take care to use a clean side of the rag, with each wipe to avoid pushing dirt around that could potentially damage your tint. 

Next, reapply your cleaner and use your squeegee to remove the moisture completely.  Use a horizontal motion working from the top to the bottom.  If there is any moisture remaining, mop it up with another clean cloth or microfiber rag.

It is possible during the initial application process, small spots of glue or adhesive may have been left behind on your tint.  Easily remove with a cotton ball soaked in acetone.  This works efficiently to remove adhesive without harming the film in anyway.  Go over the area once more with clean water and a soft cloth.

Additional Tips

If you don’t want to bother with a cleaning solution, another simple cleaning tool is regular water and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.  Once the window is scrubbed clean, use the squeegee or a soft cloth to fully dry the window.

Always clean your tinted windows with care.  Be extremely cautious around the corner edges as to avoid catching the corner of the tint and pulling it loose from the window.

It is also recommended that you use a soft cloth or microfiber rag instead of paper towels to obtain the shiniest, streak free windows.  Paper towels tend to leave tiny pieces behind that cause your clean windows to appear dirty right away.
