Mommas-to-be, if it’s your first time being pregnant – or if you’ve seen the pictures from your first time being pregnant – you are going to be hit with a fashion culture shock. All of a sudden, none of your clothes fit, and the ones that do seem to lay on your body all wrong. And perhaps the most difficult thing of all to cope with: sometimes you just can’t achieve your personal fashion style because there isn’t a selection in the maternity aisle. So let’s go through the ins and outs of what to wear while expecting.
You’ve heard the stories and, sorry, but they’re true. Being pregnant means lots and lots of stains on your clothes. And while you might be clever and bring an extra shirt to change into, you never know when that just won’t be enough. This is where busy patterns come to play: the stains aren’t spotted as easily and in case a stain won’t come out, you’ll probably be able to wear that piece again without much worry. When choosing bottoms, go for darker colors, and try to carry a spare pair of leggings in your car or your bag.
Trust me, there is no use in hiding it. Your belly is only going to get bigger, and there is absolutely nothing to be ashamed about. Way too many moms just buy clothes that are two sizes too big and wear them throughout their pregnancy. But wearing bigger clothes won’t make you look good, it will just make you look shapeless! The key is finding the proper maternity wear in your correct size. This will fit properly on your body and proudly display your belly as it grows. If you still want to shop in regular store sections or wear things from your closet, focus on things that are long rather than wide, because long tops will cover your belly while wide ones will only make you look wider.
Seriously, there is no need to buy new pairs of low-rise jeans that you might be able to button up beneath your belly, when you can just buy amazing, stylish maternity jeans and be comfortable while looking chic. Don’t think about buying maternity clothes as a waste of money: to have a healthy pregnancy, you have to be comfortable in your skin and in your clothing. Besides, you will wear your maternity clothing even after you give birth, until your stomach gets a bit smaller, and you can always gift or resell any clothing that is left in a decent state. Or, who knows, save them for your next pregnancy?
There is no reason why an expecting mother shouldn’t dress girly and fun if that is what her style normally is. No need to become a 60’s housewife, wearing long, wide dresses with a belt – unless that’s your personal style. The thing is, during your pregnancy, you might find a new style you love, and call it your pregnancy style, because the same way we slightly change our style if we gain or lose weight, we can change our style when we have a big belly growing. However, don’t think that you can’t be serious and professional with a bump, too! It might be hard to find blazers that will button up, but a good pair of maternity jeans, a white T-shirt and an open blazer can give you a commanding look, baby or no baby.
Give yourself permission to dress stylishly while you are pregnant, and you will be a happier mom. It’s a beautiful part of your life, so make the best of it, and make sure you are noticed when you walk down the street – after all, you’re glowing!
