Congratulations to Sonia Thomas for being selected as the first Mommy Master of 2014. Sonia has a great perspective on balancing motherhood with her business, which is helping people young and old heal through art.

“I want to have it all. I’ve searched long and hard to figure out how to have it all without sacrificing my time with my children. I want to spend time with my kids but still have time to help other children in need. I think that I would represent Mommy Masters by embracing all that you stand for.
I am a mommy of two toddlers and an art therapist. I gave up a full time job to stay at home with my kids until they were old enough to go to school. Now with both kids in preschool I can tailor my work schedule around them. I want to be home when they are home, drop them off and pick them up at school, as well as be there when they need me. Working for myself allows for me to have the best of both worlds.
I am a masters level, board certified art therapist and certified grief counselor. I work with children, teens, and adults managing grief and loss, self-esteem building, memory loss, cancer support, and substance abuse all while aiding in creative self- expression. I have been working with other organizations providing art therapy groups at camps. I just opened my own art therapy practice call
Brush Strokes Art Therapy, Inc. to provide private and group art therapy services in South Florida. Since opening in August 2013, I have secured several contracts with organizations from Palm Beach, Broward, to Dade County. I was also recently interviewed for the
January issue of Palm Beach Illustrated (page 153) and will presenting a seminar for the Florida Art Therapy Association Conference cruise to the Bahamas in February 2014.
Recently, I partnered up with the City of Plantation’s Parks and Rec Dept to house group children’s art and art therapy groups at Central Park. I am very excited about this new partnership! Spring registration begins February 17 with sessions beginning March 3.
Thank you Mommy Masters for recognizing that mothers are not only nurturing, loving, and strong, but determined to show their children that you can dream big and be anything!”
