Mom's Quarantine Diary: How to Help Your Family Cope Productively in the Time of COVID-19

No one prepared us all for the battle that mankind is facing right now. The unseen foe is a fatal virus that can strike you and your loved ones anytime and anywhere.The ability of the virus to spread quickly is one of the reasons why political leaders in different parts of the world have required their citizens to stay at home. Since businesses are required to halt their operations and only allow employees to work from home, the economy has also suffered from this pandemic. 

Although this deadly pandemic is a modern day plague, one of the best things it does right now is to keep all or at least most of the family members at home. However, since the kids are easily bored, it's also a challenge to keep them away from their devices and do something more productive and healthy. Sometimes, they won't even tell how they really are or what's going on inside their minds.

Allowing your children to face their devices 24/7 can eventually take a toll on their health. If your kids are always on their phones, they’ll likely suffer from weight gain and poor immune system. These can make them susceptible to common illnesses and diseases. 

In this article, you can find some of the most effective ways to get your family together as productively as possible in order to defeat boredom and most importantly, reduce the risk of depression in this time of crisis and uncertainty.  Aside from making sure that everyone stays productive during the pandemic, these activities can also cultivate new skills and serve as a platform to bond with everyone in the family. 

Plant (through the most creative means possible)

Greens make the surroundings look healthier and more alive. That is why planting is a therapeutic activity and it is indeed more fun when you do it with your family. You can even make it more enjoyable when you build your own plant boxes from recycled materials, paint clay pots, create organised plant beds, and other creative ways to do it.

Aside from using this article as your reference, planting is also a great activity, especially if your kids are diagnosed with behavioral issues. Planting with your kids can be very beneficial as this allows them to engage all of their senses, enhance their fine motor development, teaches responsibilities, and fosters family bonding. Gardening can also encourage your kids to eat healthy food. 

Set daily goals (for fun and the feeling of accomplishment)

Writing a to-do list for the day (or even for the week) is one good habit to practice while in coronavirus quarantine and even beyond it. Through setting goals as a family and individually, every member can still develop that sense of responsibility and of course, achievement when everything has been fulfilled.

Depending on the size of your family, you can set short- and long-term goals for everyone. Some of the most common goals you can accomplish with your family are learning new recipes or finishing crafts together. Setting goals can test your family’s patience and commitment over time. 

Create a family space on the World Wide Web (to share to the world)

Setting up a family website is a big and long-term project. It is even much better if you are all involved when it comes to building it from scratch to its step by step process. From the planning stage to choosing your domain name to domain registration and up until its grand launching and content creations, it is great idea to involve even your kids, especially in terms of the creative part, like logo and website designing, and even content concepts.

Creating a family space online can become your platform to share positivity to the world and highlight how unique your family is. The activities that your family does during this pandemic can inspire other families to do the same and help them survive these trying times.

Declutter for a garage sale (for space to breathe)

For the longest time, you might have been too busy to clean up every room inside your home. This quarantine season, you can let your house breathe and give yourselves more space if you spend time cleaning and decluttering. Everyone is at home during the pandemic and have enough time to clean all of the areas of the house, regardless of how big the space is.

You might also make a small income out of this when you open a garage sale for your pre-loved items. This is especially true if you opt to sell items that are still in mint condition.

Make time to learn something valuable (as fun and exciting as possible)

One of the best lessons you can teach you children is to never stop learning. So make time to teach them to learn significant skills and enjoy the process. You can use your creative imagination to make this more exciting for them.

Find interesting ways to earn and save (another way to feel accomplished while literally preparing for the future)

In this time of uncertainty, develop the habit of saving in the family. Also, find fun and fulfilling ways to start earning, like making lemonade, baking cookies, or even creating witty yet relevant contents for Youtube or your very own family website.

This quarantine season is a brandnew norm for all of us. But it should not stop you from growing as a family. So take advantage of this time and take it as positively and as productively as possible.
