Last year I began a journey, one that I never would have choosen for myself or for anyone else. On August 11th I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. I knew very little of the disease, its cause or the journey that lie before me. Over the next several months my days were filled with doctors visits, tests, radiation, chemotheraphy and eventually surgery. Although treatment took several months I was able to enter the recovery phase by the 1st of January.
For many this is where the journey ends. After the completion of treatment they return to their lives and continue to remain hopeful that the cancer does not return. While I too must remain hopeful that treatment was successful, I cannot just return to life as it was.
My journey with cancer continues with the realization that this trip could have been avoided! Had my doctors followed the recommended CDC guidelines for HPV testing my cancer would have been found long before it became invasive. Had my doctors told me about the dangers of HPV I would have taken additional precautions to make sure I was properly tested before the tumor ever had a chance to grow.
Knowing what I now do, I feel that it my obligation to share this information with others. I feel that I must focus all of the negative emotions associated with cancer and turn it into something that will benefit others.
My journey through cancer has allowed me to believe in tomorrows, however I know that belief without action is a fairy tale! Now my journey will be to take that action ...
