Overcoming the Struggles of Parenting a Child With Mental Illness

Has your child been diagnosed with a mental illness? This can be difficult to handle, and with the stigma around the subject, it can be hard to find other parents to reach out to for advice and support.

This is why you need to create a support system out of your child's teachers and doctors. They are trained to not only work with you to take care of your child's needs, but also to help you cope with the situation as well.

1. Find the Right Expert

The first step is to find the right doctor to diagnose and treat your child. This should be a doctor that can detect any small nuances in their brain so they can tell one disorder from another. 

The right doctor should also take their time to find out every detail of your child's physical, emotional, and medical history. 

2. Understand Their Diagnosis  

Once you have found the right doctor for your child and they have been diagnosed, no matter if it's depression, schizophrenia, ADHD, or any other mental illness, it's up to you as their parent to understand it. 

You can keep yourself informed by finding out information online or consulting a mental health professional about the resources you have available to you. 

3. Get Support 

Even if it doesn't feel like it, you have support available to you. Your child's doctors and specialists are always there to answer any questions and provide you with resources. 

You'll be surprised at how much your child's teachers will be willing to work with you. You should address their teachers at the beginning of each year to discuss options. 

Lastly, it's best to get the entire family together to discuss the situation. It's recommended that you try to attend a few sessions of family therapy. For example, if your child has a sibling, it can help them understand why they aren't getting as much attention as the child with the mental illness. 

4. Give Yourself Time 

It's okay to not be on top of it all the time. Every once in a while you may say or do the wrong thing and feel like the worst parent in the world. It's important to know that you'll make these mistakes. And when you do make them, you should learn from them. 

Give yourself time to adjust and get used to your child's needs and don't blame yourself with things go a little haywire.
