Should underwire bras be avoided after breast augmentation?

It is natural to want to buy the best underwire bras as soon as you have undergone a breast augmentation procedure. However, before you spend money on the new bras, you must keep a few things in mind.

Sports bras after augmentation

During the first 6 weeks of your recovery period, you will be wearing a sports bra with a front zipper which can be removed easily. You must buy a bra larger in size than the one you normally wear. It may not be as exciting as buying that Victoria’s Secret bra, it is important that you wear the sports bra for a while.

What bras can you wear after 6 weeks?

You can return to wearing a regular bra after the first 6 weeks of your augmentation but you still must not invest in an underwire bra. There are several risks of an underwire bra for the first 6 months of your augmentation. The skin tissue of your breasts is thin and may feel numb. The wire can rub on your skin and lead to irritation in the area. If you have had inframammary incision for your surgery, you will have to wait till your incisions heal completely before you can try an underwire bra.

Choosing the right bra

When you leave the experienced doctor’s office, such as Dr. Bohley,  after your procedure, it will be in a sports bra and your surgeon will recommend that you wear it for the first 6 weeks. Even when you can wear a regular bra, you must not return to wearing an underwire bra. When choosing your regular bra, you must ensure that the band does not ride over your back and is at one level with the front band. Rather than shortening the straps for lifting your breasts, you should look for a smaller size. In case you feel a space between your nipple and the cup, you have not chosen a well fitting bra.

You must talk to your doctor to know when you can begin wearing underwire bras. You should continue all follow-up appointments with your surgeon, to check for inflammation and any complications, and for the removal of your sutures.
