The Working Woman’s Guide to Healthy Eyesight

As a working woman, it is imperative that you pay special attention to your eyesight.

Studies have shown that two thirds of all visual impairment and blindness occur in women; and while it is true that women typically live longer than men, they have a higher rate of risk from eye health complications like glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration.

Women also have a high chance of suffering from certain autoimmune diseases, which is sometimes accompanied by sight problems. There is also the issue of hormonal changes brought on by normal ageing.

That said, here are a few things you can do to keep your eyes healthy as a woman.

Additionally, when you do dilate eye examination periodically, it will reveal any other condition that can affect your health including diabetes and high blood pressure. While there is no timeline for dilated eye exams, it is a good idea to talk to your eye care specialist, who will tell you how often you should have one.

  • Eat a healthy diet:

A healthy diet has been linked to a lower risk of eye disease and other age-related autoimmune diseases. Food groups that contain plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and fish are especially recommended for women who spend a lot of time using work gadgets like computers and mobile devices. It is also a good idea to include non-meat protein like beans and nuts in your diet.

  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle:

Keeping to a healthy lifestyle is essential to overall good health, and not just the health of your eyesight. This means keeping fit by exercising regularly, avoiding cigarettes, and eating healthy.

If your work schedule will make regular exercise difficult, consider converting certain parts of your routine into a workout. For example, if you take the train or a cab to work, drop one stop away from your regular stop and walk the rest of the way. It is also a good idea to talk brief walk breaks if you sit in a spot for too long in the office.

Staying healthy by keeping fit should be an essential part of your lifestyle as this will reduce the risk of you developing health complications that can lead to eye disease.

Remember to talk to your doctor before starting any exercise regime, so that you can get expert advice on what will suit your body system.

Whether you are doing chores around the house, playing sports, or working in an environment that involves sparks, flying debris, or chemicals, it is important that you wear safety goggles or other made from polycarbonate material.

  • Wear sunshades:

If your work requires that you spend long hours under the sun, you should get a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from the harsh sunlight. Prolonged exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun can significantly increase your risk of cataract or age-related macular degeneration (AMD). When getting sunshades, look for something that has the capacity to block out at least 99% of UVA and UVB rays.

Safety tips for wearing makeup

Some of the more common, and less severe eye issues that affect professional women are often related to cosmetics, especially the makeup applied on and around the eyes. These issues are common among women who wear contact lens. Most of the facials and eye products contain synthetic oils, which if you are not careful can be transferred to your contact lenses, resulting in blurry vision, and deposit on the lens that can result in dryness, discomfort, and other allergic reactions.

Certain types of mascara also contain these synthetic oils that if not properly applied can cause problems at the top of the eyelid, leading to irritations and teary eyes. In some cases, improperly applied mascara on the eyelid can cause styles and a number of other eye infections.

To avoid these eye issues and discomfort, ensure that you use makeup products that you know are original, and that contains ingredients that are not harmful to your body.

Also, regardless of how tired you are after your busy day, never go to bed without removing your contact lens even if the manufacturer says it is okay to do so. Your eyes need time to rest from contact lens use, and for most busy women, night time is the only time there are not reading through one document or another.

You should also make routine eye checks a part of your overall health plan. In fact, a periodic visit to the Optometrists a worthwhile investment for your ocular health.
