Ways to Lower Home Costs Without Sacrificing on Comfort

Whether it is the dead of winter or you are in the middle of a summer heat wave, you will need to use your gas and electricity to heat or cool your home and stay comfortable. Doing so, however, could result in high energy bills that could make it difficult for you to stick to your budget.

With the tips below, though, you can lower your home costs without sacrificing on your comfort throughout the year.

Focus on the Weather Stripping

Weather stripping is found around the windows and doors throughout your home, but when it is torn or worn out, it could end up letting in cold or hot air throughout the year, resulting in your heating or cooling system having to work harder than necessary.

You can lose up to 12 per cent of your home’s heat because of improper weather stripping, so by simply replacing it every few years or whenever you notice that it has become damaged, you can prevent draughts and lower your energy bill.

Replace Filters Regularly

Another easy step that you can take to reduce your home costs without sacrificing your comfort is replacing the filters of your air conditioner, heat pump, and furnace regularly. If they do not yet need to be replaced, you can even just clean these filters to keep all of these heating and cooling units working like new. The more efficiently these units operate, the less money you will need to spend to heat and cool your home and remain comfortable.

Use a Portable Heater

With so many affordable space heaters available, you can plug one into the room you use most and remain warm while lowering your thermostat for the entire house. This could dramatically reduce your heating costs, especially if you are spending money on heating the rooms throughout your home that you do not spend a lot of time in.

Invest in a Programmable Thermostat

Programmable thermostats are hugely popular today, and for good reason. With these thermostats, you can automatically turn down or raise the temperature whenever you are not going to be home or even at night while you sleep.

For example, you can lower your heat during the winter or turn off the air conditioner in the summer when you know that no one will be home, such as during work hours. But you can also set it to turn on again automatically prior to your return home so that your house will be the perfect temperature and you will not have to wait for the temperature to regulate before you feel comfortable.

Basically, by using a programmable thermostat, you can save a lot of money because you can set it to work only when it really needs to.

These are just a few of the many ways that you can reduce your energy bills while staying cozy or cool throughout the year. In addition to all of the tips above, you can also seek out more information regarding getting your energy at a lower rate.
