When you go back to your tech job as a new mom

Approximately 20 percent of women work in the tech industry. If we were to take a close look at the data brought by virtual event solutions companies, we were to discover that female employees hold less than 20 percent of US tech jobs. The tech industry continues to be a man’s world. It is a mystery why there are not more women in tech. Women achieve better grades than boys when they pursue computer science at university level, not to mention that they are better in tech than men. Yes, as surprising as it may seem, women have better digital skills and they are capable of handling complex work activities.

Being a woman, you are always in a minority. Not only are you outnumbered, but also you feel different. It is a good thing that you have the necessary tools to skyrocket your career in real time and make every single day more enjoyable. Defying stereotypes is not easy, especially when you have a baby. People are under the impression that you are soft and that all you want to do is look after the little one. After having a baby, you are a completely different person. Yes, but that does not mean that you do not want to get back to your normal life. You love what you do and you would not give it up for the world.

We have some insights to share for soon-to-be-mothers that are eager to get back in the workforce.

You will go through a period of adjustment

Right now, you are curious to know what changes there will be on the horizon. What you need to know is that there will be a period of adjustment. You are already familiar with the unspoken language and the nature of the company’s culture. This may be so, but the first weeks back will be a little bit difficult. Chances are that you will experience some kinds of emotions, not necessarily negative ones. If you feel overwhelmed, do not panic because it is normal. It is completely normal to go through a period of adjustment. If you are feeling down in the dumps or if you feel that you have no energy, do not threat. It does not matter if you start working immediately or stay a little bit with the baby. At some point or another, you are bound to experience some emotions and effects on the physical front.

You will have to become accustomed to the new technologies

Your company is not small and a lot of things have changed since you have been away. Technology is ever evolving, so it should not come as a surprise that the enterprise you are working for has made the transition to big data tools. When you have time on your hand, read more about the tools that are used to store and analyze data. Just so you know, with the help of these intelligent tools, it is possible to understand unstructured data and capture what is most important. Embedding this technology with modernized business process applications improves productivity in the workplace. Your boss will be able to help you with the new technologies – if there is more than one, of course - and they will make sure that you get it. Your employer will probably want to host lunch and learn meetings. This way, you will have the chance to learn in a setting that is not so formal.

You will be offered the flexibility to work from home

Owing to the fact that tech workers do their jobs over the computer, they have the possibility to work from home. Working from home is slowly becoming the norm when it comes down to IT professionals. Individuals love the fact that they can earn a living and, at the same time, pursue their passion. You, on the other hand, will love the fact that you are not away from your loved ones. It is impossible to not find this flexibility great. There is no reason to go to work when you feel nauseated or your back hurts. If you are put in the situation of commuting miles, which are not deductible, you should really consider becoming a stay-at-home mom. This will not hurt your role in the company. Plus, you do not have to be at the office all the time.

You will know what kinds of projects you are able to handle

So, you are officially back to work. Your post-maternity leave has come to an end and your colleagues are waiting for you. When you get back, the members of the team will tell you what projects they have been working on while you were gone. You will be shocked to discover that your perception on things has changed in a short period of time. At the beginning, you will not be happy with working all day long. Very soon, you will get excited and will want to show your peers that you are still the best.

You need to make it clear from the get-go what you can and what you cannot handle. If you think that certain tasks are far too difficult for you, share your thoughts with the members of the team. They will understand what you are going through and help you reach peak performance. The members of a team are supposed to support each other. It is not a competition and chances are that your colleagues do not see things that way. It is important to trust your instincts. If you cannot get the perfect results, then do not try too hard. You do not have to worry about others judging you. The only thing that you should worry about is your own judgment.

Final considerations

There is nothing better than being a mom, apart from returning to the tech world. You will not have horrible experiences, you can be sure of that. You will continue to love your place of employment and have the career that you deserve. The kid will not stand in your way. As a matter of fact, the little one will give you the power you need to succeed.
