Wine + Women + Mental Health = a healthy discussion…that’s general an equation that just doesn’t add up in today’s media.

Wine + All The Things

And I don’t mean to pick on just the fermented grapes. Alcohol – in pretty much any form – is portrayed as the magical elixir of society, necessary for every event, celebration, bad day, good day, stressful day and any day in between.

But, hey, before you say “you’re a crazy old lady trying to ruin my good time. Life is stressful enough – don’t even think about taking my wine.” Or, “you must live under a rock and have never had a day of fun in your life.” I want you to know, I used to be on the bandwagon that alcohol served every purpose it promised – to unwind, relax, commiserate and connect.

  • Still not convinced? I voted for alcohol sales on Sunday in our last local election! I was on board, y’all.

Up until about a year and a half ago, I enthusiastically embraced daily drinking (and day drinking!) and shared all the Mommy Juice Memes.

I’m not here to vilify alcohol or convince anyone to put down their Chardonnay. BUT if you find yourself depressed or trying to manage your anxiety and nothing seems to be working – MAYBE you should examine your drinking.

Feeling Better

But since I changed my drinking habit, I feel so much better. The anxiety that I tried to exercise away, diet away, swallow away (in the form of a nice little anti-depressant), was always lingering right underneath the tickle in my rib cage.

I was doing all the right things. What’s wrong, then?

Alcohol was the last thing I tried to eliminate from my diet and lifestyle. I mean, I’m not the most social person in the world but I don’t want to be sequestered to Siberia either. I didn’t think quitting alcohol could ever fit in my life – plus, I needed it for all my stress!

So that’s why I’m so grateful for The Today Show for sharing this message about the fact that mental health improves for women when they quit drinking.

But is it?

Consider This

We hear lots of messaging about how wine is good for heart health, great for sleep, living to a ripe old age of 104, etc. but I actually don’t know if it’s common knowledge that it contributes to anxiety and depression. I mean. I didn’t.

My anxiety and depression are pretty much a thing of the past. It keeps getting better and I feel more confident than I ever have. And only when I stopped drinking did I feel different from the inside out.

As I get older I’m definitely more aware that without my mental well-being, my quality of life would greatly suffer. And, I think we should all give ourselves more credit for being able to deal with stress or have a good time without needing it.
